CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.
EVANGELISTIC CAMPAIGN. Sunday was the commencement of the great evangelistic campaign at Emmanuel Congregational Church, Andrew Johnstone, the blind soldier evangelist, addressing two large congregations. In the morning the evangelist delivered a special address to Christians on “Good Cheer,” basing his remarks on St. John-16:33, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” In introducing the subject the speaker gave personal testimony to the comfort of the text. He said : “In the difficulties of life one seems almost overwhelmed, the billows of trial and tribulation roll over us, but, as our faith is in Him we rise on the crest of the wave.” The speaker testified to tlie fact that, after 12J years of blindness, lie had experienced peace- in what many might think the greatest affliction. The two main points stressed in the text were the good cheer of forgiveness and the good cheer of comfort. . . ... In the evening the subject was “Good News,” the text being Ist Cor. 15: 1,2,3. The speaker said that in these days there seemed to be much misunderstanding ill the minds of many in regard to the meaning of the word gospel. Many subjects were dealt with from religious platforms and it was possible for a man to preach truth for years and yet never preach the Gospel. The speaker then made plain that the Gospel was a proclamation from the God of Heaven to H : s guilty creatures on earth. It was good news, because the acceptance of it delivered from the fear of two of tlie greatest enemies that come across the pathway of man, namely, death and sin. In conclusion, the speaker lifted up Christ as the only deliverer of refuge for the soul of man.
To-night at 7.45 Mr Johnstone will continue his evangelistic campaign in Emmanuel Congregational Church, Broadway. The subject will be “Obstacles to Revival.” Mrs Johnstone will render the solo and a collection will be taken.
