BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY
LEVIN BRANCH. ' The annual meeting of tho Levin branch of tho British and Foreign Biblo Society was held in the Presbyterian Hall. Rev. Mr Pato presided over a good attendance. Rev. Mr Beckett and Rev. Air Davies were also present. Mrs Davie, tho secretary, gave an account of tho work for the year.
Tho chairman, on behalf of those present, extended a hearty welcome to Airs Porter (organising secretary) who complimented tho branch upon its record year, 1929, which showed a result of £SO collected. Tho result spoke volumes for tho loyalty of both collectors and subscribers and had been a source of great encouragement to the Bible House staff., 'lhe speaker said that 12,175,292 volumes of the Scriptures had been issued (during the year ended Alarcli, 1930. This surpassed all previous records. Over ono million complete Bibles, over ono million and a-quarter Testaments and 9,795,000 single integral portions of the Bible had been sent out, representing an increaso of 775,000 on the previous year. New Zealand had circulated 30,566 volumes last year in 30 languages. Tho society now sends out the Scriptures in 630 languages. Airs Porter also spoko of the work of the society’s colporteurs, -native workers of many lands, numbering nearly 1000, who were responsible for the hand-to-hand distribution of eight million copies out of the twelve million copies issued. Nothing daunts these brave servants of God who penetrate into many places where missionaries cannot go, often enduring untold hardship and persecution. Air Pate gave a most interesting address, speciallv stressing the invaluable work of the colporteurs and the reasons why ho so greatly appreciated that method of working. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Airs Duckworth, whose election was carried by acclamation: secretary, Airs Davie, who was heartily thanked for her work in the past; vice-presi-dents, the ministers of the town, and the Salvation Army leader. The list of collectors is not quite complete, but will be announced very shortly. Air Davies moved.a very hearty vote of thanks to the ladies of the Presbyterian Women’s Alissionary Union for their kind and generous thought in providing afternoon tea. This was seconded by Air Beckett and carried by acclamation. Airs Porter was presented with a beautiful bunch of violets.
