RACING NEWS.

The Geraldine meeting opens on Thursday and concludes on Saturday.

The spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Club—a ono day fixture —will be held on Saturday. Carette by Clarenceux from Ventalera, is in foal to Robespierre, but; as she will be late in foaling she will be rested this season.

Paoanui, the dam of Royal Parade, has foaled a filly, foal to Chief Ruler. Her two-year-old by Psychology is stated to be shaping up nicely.

It is reported that Mr T. White, the former owner of High Court, received over lOOgns. for the Grandeourt gelding, who is now quarter at Wingatui.

1.0. U. (Paper Money—Esther) won the Lavington Plate at the Werribeo races on September 6. Amor, another former New Zealander, was also a runer therein. Royal Debate (King Mark or King John—Pourparler) won both the Flying and Farewell Handicaps at the Helena Vale meeting in Australia on September 6.

It is understood that tile Wanganui Jockey Club suffered a loss of nearly £IOOO on its recent meeting. The rivercity club has fared badly for some considerable time.'

When Limited makes his next appearance it may be as a hurdler. The absurd gelding has been schooled over tho battens recently and he is stated to have shown ability to jump. Contrary to earlier reports, it is now reported from Australia that Valicare recently produced a filly to Magpie. She is now to be mated with the Dominion sire, Night Raid. Reports from the south mention that Sailor’s Hope, the dam of Waterline, who lias been doing particularly well in Australia since being purchased, has produced a filly foal to Day Comet.

The big Lackham two-year-old, Gibraltar, who was a runner in the Two-Year-Old Parade at Wanganui, is the possessor of size and speed. While he did not figure in tho Debutante Stakes, he should be heard from later on.

C. Eastwood, who resumed riding at tho past Grand National meeting after having ben out of the saddle for some considerable time as the result of a fall at Takapuna, had another heavy spill at Riccarton last week, but was only winded. James Smith, who was a prominent rider on the West Coast many years ago, still rides work notwithstanding the fact that he is approaching 70 years. Hale and hearty, tne veteran maintains a keen interest in all mattors pertaining to the thoroughbred.

The Southland mare Coomassio has been purchased by a prominent Kumarea sportsman, and will race at the Christmas carnival on tlie Coast. This mare won her last race at Dunedin last season, beating some good horses, but has started 11 times since for a second and a third. F. E. Jones has taken charge of Semper Paratus once again at Riccarton and the chestnut is stated to bo looking in good order. He is booked to make his first appearance for his new owner at Geraldine, and as ho is very forward, he may be seen to advantage in some of his early engagements.

Mr T. H. Lowry’s brood mares Miss Cute, dam of Clever, and Auratum (Ab-surd-Desert Gold) have been sent on a visit to Hunting Song. The pair made tho journey by horse-float, Mr Game Carrington, owner of Hunting Song, having had one built especially for use in connection with his stud.

The Otaki Racing Club has received very excellent nominations for its fixture next month. Awapum has played its part to that end for this centre furnishes 20 of the number for the opening day, with an additional eight fresh horses coming in oil the second day.

Nukumai has gone out for a spell, but it is hoped that tho veteran hurdler will be produced again next winter. He has been a wonderful wet track performer for several seasons, but he is slipping back, and his career in the best company must bo nearing an end. Amorist, who met with a mshap on the eve of the August carnival, necessitating a spell, has resumed wlork. R. Longley has restricted him to easy tasks so far, but he will start on something more strenuous soon, as it is hoped to have him racing in hurdle events at the Dunedin and Wellington meetings next month. ' Wine Tray and Silver Tray are amongst the band of workers at present being stretched out on the tracks at Waipukurau. The former, a five-year-old gelding by Tea Tray—-Orvieta, started five times last season without any financial results being forthcoming. Silver Tray (Tea Tray—Miss Girons) was not seen in activity in public during the last term. Lordlike, who has been on tho idle list for a short time, through having ricked a muscle in one of his legs while playing in the paddock, has been set going again. He is a bit on tho hearty side and although nominated amongst tho hacks in connection with tho spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, there is no certainty that he will be amongst the contestants. The Sw’ell, who. was taken over to Victoria by tho Taranaki trainer, R. Johnson, was a well-backed candidate in the Sandown Plate (six furlong) at the Sandiown Park meeting, but he was never really dangerous. It was a poor Plate field, and his fifth was only a comparatively moderate effort. However, he may „bo seen to better advantage over a long a distance.

Amongst the winners at Wanganui was Vandyke, who is not the first of that name to race in New Zealand (says the Dunedin writer Sentinel). Tho first of the name was got by Vanguard from Lady’s Maid, and was a well-known performer in his day. The last time the writer saw the Vanguard Vandyke was many years ago, when reporting a Nasoby meeting just before that fixture became defunct. On climbing up to the box seat of a four-in-hand team to reach the course one of the leaders seemed to have a familiar appearance. An inquiry found that it was the original Vandyke. Amongst the young horses the local trainer, A. P. Brady, is exercising into the ways of galloping at Te Rapa are Darby King, a three-year-old ' gelding by King Lupin—The Rand mare; Flying Rose, a three-year-old filly by Rosewing—Lorona; Excolla Tea, a three-year-old filly by Polycrates —Black Tea, and a three-year-old by Tho Fortune Hunter. The latter trio were purchased at the Sydney yearling sales. Another to be seen out of late is a three-ycar-okl filly by Lapidary from Sport’s Queen, the dam of Prince Val. BAD DAY FOR N.Z. BIG WAGERS AT CANTERBURY PARK. New Zealand visitors will long remember tho Canterbury Pai'k meeting of September 6, 1930, for it was indeed a black day for them. Plunge after plunge went astray, and when the ray of sunshine did come along in Paquito, they failed to profit by it to any appreciable extent (says a Sydney writor). The following record of big bets about Now Zealand candidates will show at a glance how the visitors fared: Goshawk, £IOOO to £333 and . £450 to £l5O from J. Hollow; £250 to £IOO from A. J. Matthews, and £l5O to £SO S. Baker and R. Cotton. Hard Words, £IOOO to £250 from J: T. Hackett; £4OO to £IOO from R. Claytion A. J. Matthews and S. Baker. King March, £9OO to £4OO and £2OO to £IOO from J. Hackett; £SOO to £250 from C. Hall; £3OO to £l5O from J. Molloy; £2OO to £IOO from S. Baker. Cimabue,. £IOOO to £IOO from J. Hackett. Nightmarch, £360 to £BO from J. Molloy. THE AVONDALE MEETING. THE EVENTS DESCRIBED. CUP TO PRODICE. Per Press Association. . ' AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. King Colossus was made a warm favourite for the Avondale Stakes, with Bonny Lea and Lady Vane next in order. Halfway down the running, King Colossus took command again and staved off a challenge by Lady Vane by a neck, Royal Artist being three-quarters of a length away. Summertime was fourth. Lucy Rose went out favourite for the Hying Stakes, with Nancy Lee and Awaken next in demand. Valstreet delayed the start and eventually was left at the post. JOCKEY SUSPENDED,

SYDNEY, Sept. 21,

Sporting writers here are complaining that interference during races is far too common. There was considerable jostling in the Rosehill Guineas, and the connections of Veilmond express the opinion that their horse was deliberately “dealt with.” The stewards, after an inquiry, found that jockey Simpson was responsible, and suspended him for two months. Dempsey, the rider of Calmond in the same race, said that his mount was exceedingly lucky to remain on its feet, so marked was the interference.

TROTTING,

PADLOCK BACK IN WORK

The Longburn tnotting mentor, W. Hughes, who is privato trainer to Mr J. A. Mitchell, has taken Padlock in hand once again, and the ex-champion pacer will be given a preparation for the Now Zealand Cup. It had been Mr Mitchell’s original intention to retire the Hal Zolock gelding, but with the short limit of the New Zealand Cup and the chance of again being handy in the hree-for-AU, the local sportsman decided to give his old favourite another opportunity to win tlio big New Zealand handicap. . Last season Padlock headed the list of winning stake earners in the light harness game, his five wins and eight placings bringing in the substantial figure of £2387. W. Hughes has also Loch Moigh in work again and this good, but somewhat unsound pacer is being prepared for early events ahead. The mentor ahio has a bay filly by Travis Axworthy which he is educating. Hughes had a great innings ’last season, the stable’s canlidates winning the big figure of £4534 for Mr Mitchell.
