AMATEURS IN FORM. L. LAWRENCE’S HANDSOME WIN. In view of the heavy wind this afternoon, a large quota of starter’s in the road race conducted by the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was not to be expected, but- the majority of the regular riders turned out for the occasion. Eight riders faced the starter, Mr B. Crawley, in this the longest race that the local amateurs have contested this season. The performances to-day augur well for the prospects of the club’s more prominent riders in the forthcoming big road fixtures, the first of which is to Wanganui to be held on October 11. Facing a strong head-wind the starters left the starting point at the corner of Church Street West and the Sguare and proceeded to Himatangi, via Foxton Line, and thence to Makowhai through Oroua Downs. The course followed was then through Rongotea to the Ivairanga School corner to Rangitikei Line, and so home to the finishing point at the corner of Rangitikei and Featherston Streets. The contestants did not have the advantage of the wind at their backs until reaching Himatangi, when, however, it was only slight. Rough going was experienced from Himatangi to Makowhai factory, the wind being at the riders’ backs from the latter place to the finishing point. Lawrence, who had conceded 15 minutes to the limit man, caught Anderson at Himatangi and Belli about half way between Himatangi and Makowhai. He overtook Hyde at Rongotea, but Anderson caught him up at Kopane, and rode with him for the remainder of the journey. Rogers’ machine sustained a puncture when haif-a-mile this side of the Makowhai factory. Lawrence and Anderson were first to appear in sight, the resulting sprint up the straight proving of great interest to the spectators. Lawrence graduallv drew away from his partner and finished first by several lengths in characteristic style. His time was 2hrs 26min 3 3-ssec, this being fastest time. Belk, the limit man, came third, his arrival being several minutes later. N. Dixon finished fourth. Detailed results with the riders’ handicaps in parentheses follow: E. Lawrence (4min) 1 A. Anderson (lOmin.) 2 J. Belk (19min) ... 3

Fastest times recorded were as follow: —E. Lawrence, 2hr 26min, 3 3-5 sec; A. Anderson, 2hr 33min 3 4-ssec; N. Dixon, 2hrs 42min. Also started. —C. Hyde, 17min; D. Hayes, 12min; J. Casey, lOmin; H. Donald, the father, of the well-known track rider, Murray Donald, generously donated three prizes for competition in to-day’s fixture. The winner and second placed man received trophies valued at two guineas, and one guinea respectively, while a trophy of ten shillings was also awarded to the rider to register fastest time.
