BOXING IN SYDNEY.
BLAY KNOCKS OUT NELSON. At Leichhardt Stadium the other night Bobby Blay, featherweight champion of Victoria, knocked out Ted Nelson in the ninth term of the principal bout scheduled for fifteen rounds. Weights as announced were: Blay 9.21, Nelson 9.3 i. The Victorian, who recently defeated the Fillipino, Young Gildo, was superior in all departments. _ He boxed in characteristic style, keeping steadily after his man, and was very effective at close quarters with snappy hooks and uppercuts. He employed an almost impenetrable smother and wasted few deliveries. Nelson’s defence against a lancelike, persistent left was poor, and Blav frequently caused him to miss badly by clever ducking. Nelson plodded along patiently, and in the closing stages of. the fourth round connected with a. right swing to the head and then with a left hook to the jaw. Blay, however, was not affected to any noticeable extent and continued to amass points. Nelson weakened as a result of the Victorian’s relentless wearing-down tactics, and in the ninth round he was sent to the canvas as the result of a left hook to the chin. He pluckily attempted to rise at the count of eight, but the referee intervened and declared Blay the winner.
