THE AVONDALE MEETING. THE EVENTS DESCRIBED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. The weather was fine and the attendance good for the opening of the Avondale spring meeting. The track was holding after rain during the week. CLOSE FINISHES. In the Maiden Plate, _ Chrysology, Rosshire and Jaeldy Karo were the best backed. Escalus began best from Operatic, Rosshire and Jaeldy Karo. Vanessa had charge on entering, the straight from Escalus and Operatic, but halfway down Jaeldy Karo came through \\;ith Rosshire, whom he beat by a short head. Arch Eagle was a neck away. Merrymason was fourth. Fourteen started in the Kingsland Hurdles, Make Up, Calaris and Daylight being best backed. Air King started best, followed by Pendennis and Daylight. Daylight /was first into the straight, with Air King and Calaris handy. Air King beat Daylight by two lengths. Royal Day was a length and a half away. Calaris was fourth. King Swift, lied Comet and Quincoma fell. OUTSIDER SCORES IN HACK PLATE. In the Champion Hack Plate, Courtesy, Te Hoia and Sir Kay started favourites, but an outsider in Valroe proved the winner. Biddy’s Boy and V'alroe started best. Valroe ran into fourth place entering the straight, when Biddy’s Boy stdl held the lead, but the latter was worn down and beaten by a, head, with Te Hoia a length and a half away. Sir Kay was fourth. PRODICE LASTS WELL. Fifteen started in tho Avondale Cup, which was a good betting race. On leaving the straight, Seatown and Hannibal showed the way to Standfast and Paddon. Standfast ran to the front along the back and was six lengths clear of Seatown crossing tlie top. Entering the straight, the order was Standfast, Seatown, Hannibal. High Pitch, Nassock and Historic, with Prodice moving up. Historic crime through on the outside. Prodice also pus in a run, on the inside, and, lasting the best, won by three-quarters of a length, with Historic half a length behind Standfast. Seatown was fourth. 4 KING COLOSSUS THE STAKES. King Colossus was made a warm favourite for the Avondale Stakes, with Bonny Lea and Lady Vane next in order. King Colossus led across the top, but was slightly behind Royal Artist entering the straight. Halfway down the- running, King Colossus took command again and staved off a challenge by Lady Vane by a neck, Royal Artist being three-quarters of a length away. Summertime was fourth. AWARERE WINS WELL. Lucy Rose went out favourite for the Flying Stakes, with Nancy Lee and Awaken next in demand. Valstreet delayed the start and eventually was left at the post. Awarere began best and was followed by Imament, Nancy Lee, Paganelli and Awamutu. Imament led into the straight, but tired over the last, when Awarere and Supremacy both challenged. Awarere. won in a good finish by a head from Supremacy. Imamint was a neck away and Lucy Rose was fourth. y * RACING IN DETAIL.
