RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.) Second day at Avondale on Monday. Cylinder will probably be a firm favourite for the Avondale Guineas on Monday. Pink Coat’s half-brother, Tama Waiata, has been tried over the battens, but ho has not taken very kindly to the game. Fulll.Crop ai»d Running Over, two of the two-year-olds owned by the Gisborne sportsman, Mr D. J. Barry, are promising well. Master Arch has been turned out for a spell in the Gisborne district and hs owner Mr H. Finucane, will carry on with Garzon for hurdle racing. H.H. the Begum Aga Khan, wife of H.H. the Aga Khan, recently registered her racing colours in France. These are green, white epaulettes and white cap. An interesting item of news from the Kaituna Stud in the south is that Entreaty has produced a colt foal to Night Raid, the youngster thus being a brother to Phar Lap.. ... Two youngsters by Tippler arrived in Auokland by the Ulimaroa on Tuesday, they having been sent across by J. T. Jamieson, who is at present in Sydney. Little has been seen of C. W. France at the local tracks for some time, but he was at Awapuni on Tuesday morning assisting in training operations. 'Prince Humphrey has been restricted to light tasks for some time past at Takanini, but reports state that his condition can be regarded as fairly good. Refresher is another Takanini representative who is stated to be looking a great deal better and the Tea Tray—Hula ■ Girl gelding may race at Ellerslie. Sailing Home, the four-year-old brother to Set Sail, is in steady work at Wingatui. He won two small races last season, but he is expected to do better this term, as most of the progeny of Solferino require age.

HAWKE’S BAY CLUB. CLOSING OF ACCEPTANCES. Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for all events at the spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club to be held on Saturday, the. 27th inst., close on Wednesday night at eight o’clock. It should be remembered that, in occordance with Part XV, Rule 5, Rules of Racing, all telegrams must bo confirmed in writing and name of trainer given. NEW MENTOR. W. HAWTHORNE ARRIVES. The ranks of mentors at Awapuni were added to this week when W. Hawthorne, who has been stationed at Opaki in the past, took up his quarters in this centre. Tho newcomer brought with him a string of eight horses, tho members being:— . Courageous, 6-ycar-old gelding by Thurnham —Bonne Bouehe. Shortly, 5-year-old gelding by Hyniestra— Melting Moment. Hymgreat, aged gelding by Hymcstra— Merry Gain. * Miss Hastings, 3-year-old filly by Capo Horn—Arbitration. .White Squall, 2-ycar-old by Cape Horn — Martian Miss. Thermoplylae, 2-year-old by Capo HornMiss Wayward. Two-year-old unnamed filly by Capo Horn—Ron Reno. La Parleuso, two-ycar-old filly by Psychology—Tablo Talk. Although a public trainer, Mr Hawthorne has been closoly associated with the Wellington owner, Mr W. R. ICemball, and of tho above mentioned horses all, with tho exception of Hymgreat and La Parlcusn, are tho property of tho ono sportsman. Of tho older brigade Courageous is probably the oustanding/ member of tho team, for although the chestnut had to bo content with four seconds last season, ho won £330 from three firsts and five placings in the 1928-9 season, and has entered upon activities for tho present term in very auspicious manner. At Manawatu, on tho first day of the new season, Courageous won tho Terraco Hack Handicap prior to emerging into open company to run second m tho Neaglo Handicap at Dannevirko and third in tho Marton Handicap tho following week. Gong on to Wanganui, the chestnut captured tho Hgigio Handicap on tho second day and thereby raised his stako earnings to £415 within six. weeks of the opening of* tho season. It is his mentor s intention to put the Thurnham gelding through a preparation for tho New Zealand Cup, which will give this centre three representatives in tho big raco at Ricearton. Peculiarly enough, Shortly has also boon consistently unlucky, for last season ho had to bo content with two seconds ain 1. two thirds, although ho actually topped Oourogeous in tho 1928-9 season when he won £3BO in stakes. Unfortunately, ho has entered upon another series of minor placings this season and has already run two s« conds and one third without proving capable of getting on tho winning list. . Hymgreat, who now carries the mentor s .colours, is the one jumper tho stable ai present houses, although Courageous las displayed an aptitude for this branch . of tho game. The gelding has just been brought in once again in preparation for a more active career, he having led a life of idleness season. As a four yearold he won once, ran second three times and third on four occasions while as a five-year-old ho was accorded three starts without gaining a place/ _ Of the younger brigade, Miss Hastings is tho only ono which has raced, but she failed to contribute any stake earnings m her four starts .last season. The three yearold fillies by Cape Horn were all bred by their owner, whereas Miss Hastings was purchased by Mr Kemball. All are likely looking sorts and more should bo heard from them later.

THE PROPERTY. The property on which Mr Hawtliorno has his quarters is that which was originally tho homo of Mr J. Goring Johnston, the residence having been destroyed by fire some few years ago. There is, nowovor, amplo stablo accommodation thereon ana, with plenty of paddock room adjoining, it should make an ideal homo for the team members, more particularly as it is so bandy to the racecourse. Attached to the stablo is Hugh McPhee, well known in this distret and elsewhere, in the capacity of head man, while J. Young and P. Ilirkey attend to' the riding of the team members at exercise. OUT OF THE PAST. RACE MEETING IN TB7O. A relic of tho early days of unregistered racing in New Zealand, in the form of a notice directing tho attention of Maoris

and pakehas to a race meeting witch was held at Karioi in the King Country as long ago as 1870, is in the possession of Mr James McKclvie, of Carnarvon, who is, incidentally, president of tho Rangitikci Racing Club which has its headquarters at Bulls although the last half century has witnessed littlo growth in tho township of Bulls, there was a day when it was an im portant centre along this coast and the Racing Club can boast an older pedigree than its' more important sisters of to-day. Probably tho sportsmen of thoso early days rolled up in force to the Maori fixture at Karioi for difficulty in transport —there was no main road or railway line penetrating the. King Country then —meant il'.tle to residents, and to reach their obicctve a boat trip to the upper reaches of the Wan ganui River, perforce, would have to be undertaken. In tho poster in Mr McKelvie s possession the actual race programme does not figure, and the value of tho stakes, etc., is consequently missing., but the reading of the document supplies a fund of humour. The complete document is as under; — MAORI RACE MEETING. Karioi, Jany 1, 1870. Come!
