CROSS-COUNTRY CHAMPION.

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. Tho weather was beautifully fine, but the heavy rain of the past day or two made some of the going heavy for the New Zealand 'cross-country championship. There were about a thousand spectators''at-the racecourse’ for the finish. Rose, although having'a- weak ankle, ran a splendid race, adding to his list of laurels on the track and across country. Rose, who had never previously won the Dominion title, was headed only once during the race, McCarthy (Wellington) having the. lead after a steep hill had been climbed for the first time. But Rose quickly made up the ground on the flat and' forged ahead to win by 75 yards from H. J. Brown. _ ■ A. Park, the Canterbury champion, did not complete the course, dropping out with a stitch. E. J. Johnston (Otago) was third.
