WIN FOR AUCKLAND

HAWKE’S BAY DEFEATED. SEVERAL PLAYERS INJURED. Per Press Association. NAPIER, Aug. 30. Mild weather and a ground in perfect order softened, yet not greasy from light rain overnight, made conditions for: to-day’s clash between Auckland .and Hawke’s Bay ideal. Early in the afternoon a large crowd was at "McLean Park, and by the time the teams took the field the spectators numbered over 5000. Both sides were given u warm reception when they appeared. The teams were as follow : Auckland. —Bush; Jones, Haslam, Connelly ; Weir, Bcrridge; Corner ; Soloman; Hadley, (captain), Palmer, A. Knight, Anderson, Sathcrley, A. Finlayson.' Hawke’s Bay.—Evans; Ruru, South, Grenside; Setford, Bothenvay; Geddes; Rolls; Wanoa, S. Gemmell, C. Brownlie, Steere, Campbell, Roach, Wilson. Auckland were penalised on the line-out which followed Hawke’s Bay’s kick-out, but Grenside’s kick fell short. Evans sent play to Auckland’s territory with a fine touch finder, after Berridge had put in a useful punt. Hawke's Bay were penalised in a loose scrum near midfield, and Bush put Auckland in the home twenty-five with a well directed kick. Soloman went away, after receiving a punt from Evans, but his pass to Jones was smothered by Wilson and Rolls. Another free kick gave Hawke’s Bay relief, and after nine linc-outs in seven minutes’ play back at halfway Rolls pounced on Corner and frustrated the lirst possibility of a concerted movement. But ‘Auckland reached tlio homesters’ territory with a strong kick by Bush from a penalty. An attempt to kick a goal by Berridge was unsuccessful. Led by Brownlie and Wilson, the Hawke’s Bay forwards swept away in ilie first bright piece of action that the game had produced. They repeated the medicine a minute later, out were pulled up for an infringement. Back they came, only to be stopped by another breach, for which a scrum was ordered on the half-way line. From this Auckland were penalised and Grenside put his men in the visitors’ twenty-five. The Auckland front row men, together with Finalyson, quickly moved the storm centre back to Hawke’s Bay territory were Evans saved. A penalty gave Bush an opportunity to

open tire score, but his kick, a splendid effort, from...just on half-way, passed outside the -uprights. hirst blood came a moment’ later when Corner, following- the ball fast, flung himself two or . three yards to fall on it as it touched the ground behind the posts after the bounce had beaten South.- Corner converted Ins own try. Auckland 5, Hawke’s, Bay 0. The Hawke’s Bay pack wheeled the scrum effectively and swept down on the visiting backs. Ruru took a relieving kick and centred cleverly with a good punt. Berndge faded to take the ball and Setford, snapping up, put in a smart, short run, eventually passing to Roach, who dived across. Rum’s kick was a good effort, but just missed. Auckland 5, Hawke’s Bay 3.

The Auckland backs put in a pretty movement after resumption, but play again settled down to tight work just inside Hawke’s Bay’s territory. An exciting spell of wdd play in. Auckland territory ended in Hawke s Bay being penalised. Bush placed the ball exactly on the halt line, but the kick went ’astray. The Hawke’s Bay forwards put the homesters on the offensive and, South put in a clever riui, the ball going out ten yards from the goal-line. The Auckland forwards sent play back, but Ruru whirled through the defence to put Hawke’s Bay in a good position. Again Brownlie broke away twice from successive scrummages, and was onlv just held up when trying to fall across the line m the second effort. . Relief came to Auckland when lvahu burst away and play was taken to midfield. Hawke’s Bay were not to be denied, however, and in a forward rush Steere picked lip and sent-on to Brownlie. After making useful ground, the big forward passed to Grenside,. who crossed tlieAuie. The Hawke's Bay captain failed with the kick a minute'before the breather..-,.' Hawke’s Bay 6, Aucldandi.s.

A spell of play which' was spectacular, but which lacked finish ushered in the second session. The backs and forwards of both sides contributed to the movements in which the play veered from one twenty-five to the' other, eventually settling in Hawke’s Bay territory. Here from a loose scrum Solomon burst away with Connelly in support. The winger accepted a pass which a section of the crowd thought was forward near the goal line’!, arid" touched down as three tacklers felled

him. Bush’s kick failed. Auckland 8, Hawke’s Bay 6. Botherway dropped a pass from South who, after intercepting attractively, made a brilliant run to within 10 yards of the goal. line, swerving prettily past three defenders, and effectively fending off the attacks of two others. Setford had to bo carried off, suffering from a severe knock on the leg, Ruru coming in and Cooke coming on to the wing position. Sctford’s retirement was followed by ragged and willing play, the game being repeatedly held up for obstructions and occasionally for minor injuries. The excitement reached fever heat as Ruru and South and a moment later Wanoa produced strong, fA-t runs which endangered the Auckland citadel. Hawke’s Bay were further weakened when Roach left the field with an injured shoulder, Heffernan replacing him. A neat punt by Corner round the blind side put Auckland within a few yards of the goal line, hut sound defence kept them out, and bustling forward work, followed by a spirited run by the backs, put Hawke’s Bay in a safe position again. Satherley retired with an injury, but Barnes, who replaced him, was hurt in less than a minute, and had to leave the field, Gallagher’s services being called on. A short spell of loose forward play brought the game to an end, the scores being:— Auckland 8, Hawke’s Bay G. Mr H. Ividson, of Napier, was the referee. RUGBY IN RANGITIKEI, RATA THE CHAMPIONS.
