In the semi-finals at Brookline today, Morrill and Shields beat Nuthall and Lott o—2, 6—4; Cross and Allison beat Corbiero and Mercur 6—3, 6-<—4. SOUTH AFRICAN TENNIS TEAM. NOT LIKELY TO TOUR NEW ZEALAND. HOPE OF A VISIT FROM AMERICANS. Failure has attended all efforts by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to get Australia to co-operate in the proposed tour of Australia and New Zealand by a representative South African team, and it is likely that the project will be dropped. Latest advices from South Africa are that the tennis authorities there are more interested in a team visiting that country, and the governing body apears desirous of being host to a team of Australians. . There is a possibility of a rival attraction for New Zealand. This is the visit of the Davis Cup stars, .W. M. Allison, J. Van Ryn and G. M. Lott, to Australia in the new season. These three famous youngsters, who have won national doubles in the United States, Germany, France and England, and have held the Wimbledon doubles for the past two seasons, are willing to visit Australia, and an invitation has been despatched to them. With the three will be B. Bell, another youngster. Negotiations were undertaken by J. Willard, the Australian Davis Cup representative, with the four Americans, and he has advised Australia that they are willing to travel. It appears that all that is required is an official invitation, which has been sent, the United States Lawn Tennis Association is expected to advise Australia soon. Because of the protracted period of silence on the part of South Africa, and the impossibility of obtaining Australian co-operation because of clashing dates, the suggestion will be made at the next meeting of the New Zealand Council that an endeavour be made to fit in a visit with the American team. Councillors consider _ that the South African visit is certain to fall through, savs a Wellington correspondent.
