BOXING TOURNAMENT

PAHIATUA FIXTURE. AUCKLANDERS IN ACTION. Keen interest was taken in the amateur boxing tournament -held by the Pahiatua Boxing Club at Pahiatua last evening. The Foresters’ Hall was crowded, many spectators finding standing room only. The programme was a lengthy one, but included some good bouts. The members of tho Auckland representative football team which played Bush in the afternoon, were the guests of tho club and provided two bright bouts. A valuable cup for the most scientific boxer of tire evening was awarded to H. Reeves. The referees were Messrs M. O’Brien and G. Watchom, who shared the honours, being assisted by Mr A. J. Havill in the judging. At the conclusion the trophies were presented by the president, Mr G. Oxley. Details are as follow :

The star bout of the evening was bebetween E. Oxley (Pahiatua) 9.4, v. R. Forward (Wanganui) 9.7.—Th0 first round was tame, Forward gaining a slight advantage when he rocked Oxley with a straight right on tho jaw. The second was fought at a fast pace, but the going was still slightly in favour of Forward, whose poking lefts and right swings had Oxley thinking. However, Oxley showed more of Ins old form in tho last two rounds. The final session was characterised by hard hitting and it was only in the last minute that Oxley turned defear into victory. Forward was staggered with a hard right, and a minute later Oxley connected with a terrific left swing on the side of tho head that sent Forward down for nine. Ho was groggy on Iris feet when the gong sounded. Tho judges awarded the decision to Oxley. V. Cosford (Pahiatua) 5.5, v. N. Christiansen (Feilding) 5.3. —Both lads made the pace merry, the Pahiatua bov being too strong, and carrying tho fight all tho way, to receive the verdict.

Lawrence (Nircaha) 10.7 v. Pyke (Feilding) 10.7. Lawrence did not last twenty seconds. Pyke hit him twice on Lhe head and ho went down for nine, and lie had no sooner risen than he was dropped again with a left to the side of the jaw. The referee stopped the bout.

S. Walsh (Pahiatua) 6.7 v. C. Allsop (Ruawhata) B.o.—Marking his sixth successive victory, Walsh secured an easy win. Despite the disadvantage in weight and reach, the Pahiatua lad did not hesitate to make the fight, and ho had no trouble in getting under his opponent’s guard to pester him with a succession of lefts to the head, it was a case of science against weight. R. Pratt (Pahiatua) 6.6 v. P. Williams (Feilding) 6.l3.—There was little between tho boys, who gave a bright display. Both traded punches to tho head. Williams dropped his guard in the second round ana took a good deal of punishment. The verdict went to Pratt, who had a better style and was a more finished boxer.

G. Gregory (Pahiatua) 10.0 v. J. Davies (Hamua) 9.B.—The first round was even but uneventful. In the second Davies got the measure of his opponent’s defence and got home with left taps to the nose. The third was all Davies’s, and he crossed powerful rights to the face and body, being awarded the decision. Gregory was glad when the bout finished. F. O’Styke (Pahiatua) 9.3 N. Sinclair (Palmerston North) 9.7. O’Styke has developed a habit of chopping with his right glove open, and in the first round he was warned by the refei-ee. The first round was even, but O’Styke took the second by a narrow margin, sending stiff rights and lefts to the jaw. However, the Palmerston North boy came to light in the last round and, ignoring jolts to his head, he scored points with both fists and a draw was a popular decision. T. Holden (Pahiatua) 8.12 v. B. Coughlan (Palmerston North) 9.3. — The opening round was tame, but Coughlan came to light with both fists to the body following up with stiff right hooks to the chin. Holden exploited his straight left, and in the next round worried his opponent with darting thrusts that ultimately won him the bout. Coughlan’s display was disappointing and he appeared to be out of form. -

A. Ford (Palmerston North) 11.0 v. H. Reeves (Hamua) 11.10. —Reeves made a good showing in the first round, dealing out lefts and rights to the head. Ho made the mistake in the second of standing back for a knock out, and Ford took the fight to him and pierced his defence with . right swings. Reeves took the last round easily, stopping Ford’s rushes with straight hard lefts and rights to the head. The decision was to Reeves. r. He'keth (Feilding) v J. Hawkins (Fketahunaf 9.0. —Hawkins was an easy winner all the way, outclassing his opponent, to be awarded the decision. J. Beech (Pahiatua) 9.13 v. J. O’Reilly (Ashburton) 9.0. —Beech was toe hard a hitter for O’Reilly, whose Sj.e&a was not a sufficient recompense for the disparity in weight. The latter smothered many of Beech’s hard right swings, but his ear was opened and the referee stopped the bout at the end of the second round, and gave the decision to Beech. FOOTBALLERS IN THE RING. W. Jones (Auckland) 13.0 v. C. Satherley (Auckland) 12.7. —Neither had

anv knowledge of the fistic art other than an instinctive desire to puncn, and fists were flying in the aLr t , a l?~ descending from all directions, batnerlev got home with the greater proportion, Jones’s windmill swings, which would have felled an ox, luckily sailing over his opponent’s head, inev set to like a couple of champions in the last round, Jones emerging irom a hectic session with a bleeding nose and a grin and Satherley with the verdict and a bigger grin. J. Barnes (Auckland) 12.10 v. A. Berridge (Auckland) 12.7. —The bout was merry while it lasted. Berridge bounced round the ring and dealt out lefts and rights to the head, ripping an occasional left swing to tho body. Barnes covered and did not come to light until the second round, whan he sent Berridge to the canvas with two right** to tho jaw. The referee stopped the bopt when Berridge crumpled up under the influence of a right swing to the solar plexus.
