(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Aug. 14. The local Salvation Army Hall was taxed to its utmost last evening on the occasion of a social evening. A programme of songs, recitations and instrumental items was much appreciated. Mr J. K. Hornblow presided and. Mr G. F. Smith presented prize packets. Ensign and Captain Neaiy were in charge and were responsible for a pleasant and enjoyable evening for all who attended. . The Methodist ladies’ social afternoon was held at the residence of Mrs Potts, Norbiton Road, yesterday. Mrs Potts was assisted by Mesdames Fowler and J. Walker. Business was transacted and an interesting competition was won by Mrs J. Chrystall. Afternoon tea was provided and a most enjoyable time was spent by all. Another afternoon will be held at an early date. A vote of thanks was passed on the motion of Mrs Tapp. The monthly sitting of the Magistrate s Court was held this morning and was a record for brevity. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided and the sitting did not occupy more than fifteen minutes. Leonard McCarthy was charged with driving a motor lorry on the Himatangi highway on July 24th after sunset without a tail light attached. Defendant pleaded guilty to having no tail light on the lorry when it was no° in motion, but said there was a tail light when the vehicle was moving. Constable Owen said the charge was a sequel to an accident on the highway on the night in question when three motor vehicles were involved in a smash which fortunately was not tendered by any serious consequences. Defendant was fined 10s, with costs 10s. Judgment was given for plaintiff in the following undefended civil cases: G. Hartley v. A. M. Wright, £l9 4s, costs £2 Os 6d; R. Moore and Bergin v. A. M. Wright, £8 12s 3d, costs £1 lfti 6d; E- JEveleigh v. J. Howell, £2 15s, costs £1 18s- W. R. Takarua v. A. K. Lo\e f £3,’costs £1 11s 6d. C. H. Hood (Mr Berlin) made application for possession ot a house and judgment for £9 4s rent due from J. Kelly, gunr. The Magistrate said that if a pernon did not pay the rent lie could not expect to be allowed to remain in possession of the dwelling. An order was made for possession within 14 days and judgment was given for the amount claimed, with costs £2 Is. , Yesterday Marton High School football and basket ball teams paid a visit to Foxton for the purpose of playing return matches with the local teams. Only one basketball game was played and resulted in a win for Marton by 10 points to 2 Eunice Lee scored both goals for the local team. The football game was much more evenly contested than the game played last Wednesday. Marton, however, emerged the victors again by 12 points to 3, Davey gaining Foxton’s only try after a brilliant solo effort. At the'conclusion of play the visitors were entertained to freshments at the High School when a prefect Davey, congratulated them on their double victory, but promised them even keener competition on the next occasion on which the teams met. The Maito.i teams were in the charge of Miss Bruce and Mr Hall.
