SHANNON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON Aug. 14. Tho annual •mooting of the Croquet Club which was held on Thursday afternoon, was presided over by Mrs J. T. Bovis (president) there being a fair attendance. Tho president in l»er annual report said tho past season had proved successful in every way. Tho balancesheet showed a credit balance of £l6 15s sd. Tho sum of £9 13s had been expended on further improvements to the lawn. This work was carried out under tho direction of a cominitteo from the Bowling Club. The number of members was 17 playing and 8 non-playing, and tho yearly subscriptions amounted to £25 ss. This amount of itself would not cover tho yearly expenditure, but tho providing of afternoon toa to the bowlers during the season and tho holding of afternoon card tourneys during the winter months ■qas the means of providing a credit balance. A feature of the season was the number of gala days held, when the members played all day, enjoying a picnic lunch in the pavilion. Tho Wednesday afternoon tourneys were also an excellent means of keeping members together. The club was woll represented at the Manawatu Centro inter-club matches, being fortunate enough to secure fourth place in' ,tho year’s play. Mrs Snolling ably represented Shannon at the Manawatu tournament at Palmorstoq North. Mosdames Franks and Snelling unsuccessfully defended the Brighton Mallets against Mcsdamcs Hall and Nicholson, of Lovin. A number of members paid visits to the gala days held at Lovin. Regret was expressed at the death of Mrs H. Hook. Mrs C. Franks, a prominent member, had moved to Raetihi. The thanks of the olub were due to Mrs E. Butt .(Mayoress),

for tho presentation of a silver cup for competition play; and to Mrs C. M. Cronquesc for a handsome crystal vase. The winners of tho handicap matches were: Silver cup, Mr H. G. Long-Ward; _Mrs Cronquest's vase, Mrs H. G. Long-Ward; president's trophies for doubles, Mosdames Picard and Biaikie. Thanks were due to the secretary, Mrs Snelling, the caretaker, Mr W. Fell and the auditor, Mr B. .1. Brann. Tho election of oiliccrs for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mrs B. J. Brann; vice-president, Mrs H. G. Long-Ward; secretary and treasurer, Mrs W. Shelling; couunitteo, Mosdames Bovis, Mason, pallant, Picard, Blaikio, Aim and Roach; auditor, Mr B. J. Brann. It was resolved to open the season on the same day as the Bowling olub. Hearty votes of thanks 'were accorded all past oiliccrs. Members showed a keen interest in club alfairs and everything points to a successful season. Mrs Wisnofski was the winner of the first trophy at the croquet club euchre party on Tuosday afternoon, Mrs McEwen, junr., gaining the second prize. Mr and Mrs Jay, who have beon residents of Mangaono for many years, are shortly moving to Foxton. On Wednesday afternoon Dr. F. S. McLean, medical officer of Health, paid a visit to Shannon. Tho unemployment question is still very acute in Shannon, and there is no prospect of the flaxmills opening. It was hoped that the work on tho main highway at Ihakara Hill would be continued and thus relievo tho position, but this does not seem to bo the case. j , , Tho Mangaono Social Club held a hardup dance on Wednesday evening, when visitors from Shannon were prosent. The evening was most enjoyable.
