i BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Special to “Standard.”) FEILDING, Aug. 15. The monthly meeting of the Feilding Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr C. E. Taylor) presiding. Also present were Crs E. Fair, S. D. Pearce, T. Collins, A. C. McCorkindalo, J. C. Hill, D. Pryde, J. Corpe, F. S. Guy and H. Stewart. A special order for raising a loan of £I6OO at the rate of 17-256 of a Id in the £1 for the purpose of paying the borough’s share of the Aorangi Bridge tion was passed bj 7 the council. The Mayor eaid it w 7 as hoped that the amount would not reach £I6OO, but provision had been made for raising that amount. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr A. J. Graham, Mayor of Palmerston North, thanking the council for its expression of congratulation on Palmerston North attaining city status. Received. , From the Public Works Department,.advising that the department would meet the progress payments to the contractor on the Aorangi Bridge in full and collect from the local bodies contributing to the cost of the structure later.- —The Mayor remarked that this was very satisfactory news as it meant that if no payment was claimed from the Feilding Borough Council until October it would not have to raise the loan nh then and so escape interest charges. —lhe letter was received. GENERAL. The borough librarian (Mr A. Farmer) reported that 1487 books were changed by 252 subscribers to the municipal library during July. Twenty-six new books were added to the shelves. During the month of July, 1930, 5 cows, 53 oxen, 46 heifers, 391 wethers, 52 ewes, 1 lamb, 3 vealers, 1391 bobby calves,, and 83 pigs were dealt with at the municipal abattoir. The fees amounted to £ll9 13a jd as compared with £154 13s 2d for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease ° f ßuMing = permits to a value of £2378 were issued in Feilding in July. No cases of infectious diseases were reported during the same period Permission was given to Mrs R. Carter, of Sandon Road, to hold a street stall for the unemployed fund. , , Cr McCorkindaie was appointed the council nominee on the electoral roll of the Feilding Agricultural High School. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The borough engineer, Mr T. K. Hay, reported, inter alia, as follows. The un derinentioned streets have been lightly metalled and trimmed with the grader: North Road, Churcher Street, Duke Street, Marlborough Street, Monmouth Street, Lytton Street, Derby Street Denbigh Street, Monckton Street, Weld Street, Beattie Street and Hobson Street. 264 cubic yards of metal were distributed for street, maintenance. 126 cubic yards of concrete metal were carted from the river to a dump. 78 loads of refuse were removed. Since June 24 29 men have been given work, including 12 under the returned soldiers’ account, the number employed per week averaging 14. Six names yet remain on the list of men who have not jet received relief. Giesen Road footpath and Awahuri Road footpath have been completed and Owen Street footpath is now under construction. River protection work at Johnston Park has been completed; returned soldiers were employed on this work. Two men have been employed at Kitchener Park, removing dead trees from which some 18 cords of firewood and a quantity of fencing posts were obtained. About one hundred trees at the rubbish dump were moved and replanted at the back of the property. Approximately 150 tree ferns were obtained and 100 were alanted in Kitchener Park and the remainder in Johnston Park. —Adopted.

Bain and Coy., Ltd., assembled yesterday evening to bid farewell to Mr V. G. Clift, the popular managing director of the firm, who is leaving the district. Mr 11. E. Tremewan, secretary of the company, said the staff had desired in some way to repay the many kindnesses they all had enjoyed while working under Mr Clift during his seven years with the firm and also to express their regret at his departure. Ho hoped that success would attend whatever new venture Mr Clift took up On behalf of the workshop staff Mr T. Sumner thanked Mr Clift for the consideration ho had always shown them. To work under him had been a pleasure and this was borne out by the length of service each member of the staff had with the company. They all extremely regretted his departure and wishod him every success in the future. Air Sumner then handed Mr Clift a caso r f pipes with monogram inscribed. Valedictory speeches were also vU’PalmT/ G Garret and C. Harvey, of the Palmerston North branch, following which Mr Clift replied, thanking the donors for their kindly gift. best memories of their loyalty and service to both himself and the company. OLD PUPILS’ ASSOCIATION. The Old Pupils’ Association of the Feilding Agricultural High School met last night, Mr J. D. Kilgour presiding. It was decided to have 100 life membership cards printed, tho cards to be suitably inscribed with tho crest of the O.P.A. and the name of the person holding it. It was agreed that a list of financial members of the O.P.A. bo inserted each year in “The Sheaf,” tho school magazine. No action was taken in regard to the question of affiliating with tho body of registered incorporated societies and the matter of holding an annual ball was also held over till next year. Regarding a suggestion to invest the proceeds from life membership subscriptions from which source the association lias £SO in hand, it was decided to place these in tho bank at fixed deposit. It was decided to renew the usual prize of £1 Is for English literature given to the Fligh School each year. For tho purpose of encouraging interest in tho O.P.A. it was agreed that tho president and as many of the committee as are available should visit tho High School at tho breaking up each year to wish outgoing pupils tho best of luck, etc. NOTES. The Feilding Fire Brigade was summoned to the Denbigh Hotel yesterday afternoon where a chimney had caught alight ,but the services of the brigade were not required, tho blaze burning itself out in a few moments. At about 7.45 this morning the fire.-boll again rang, the cause on this occasion being at the Feilding Convent where a pile of kindling wood placed in the oven burst into flames when the oven door was opened. 'The premises soon became filled with smoko to the alarm of tho occupants, but the attendance of the brigade was unnecessary, no damage of any sort being dono. A six-year-old boy named Geoffrey Tollan. tho son of Mr Tollan, an employee of a local hotol, had a narrow escape from drowning on Tuesday when he fell into the flooded Makino stream and was washed away. The unfortunate child was carried under two bridges but was miraculously washed into a backwater of the stream where ho was seen by another lad and pulled out. Apart from shock lie was none tho worse for his escape.
