FINE OF £IOO. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Aug. 14. Pleading guilty to a charge of keeping a common gaming house, Francis Brewer, aged 43, described as a plasterer or clerk was to-day fined £IOO, in default three months’ imprisonment. A fine of £25, with an alternative of three months’ imprisonment, was imposed on Jack Malone Hammond, aged 37, a carpenter, who acknowledged having assisted Brewer. Mr Kelly said that Brewer had been before the Court three times previously. He was always regarded as an honest man.
The Magistrate: I do not want to send an honest man to prison, but this sort of tiring cannot go on. I will again fine him £IOO.
