W.E.A. DRAMA CLASS.

FINANCE RESTRICTED. WILL CONTINUE PRIVATELY. A meeting of the W.E.A. drama class was held last evening, Mr J. W. Davidson presiding. Dr. Sutherland, of Wellington, director of the tutorial classes, wrote that owing to the reduction in the T. G. McCarthy Trust grant, and as there was some doubt as to whether the usual Government subsidy would be available, it would be impossible to arrange more classes in Palmerston North with Mrs M. Hannah, M:A., as tutor.

After discussing the position from all angles, it was decided that members should continue to meet privately in Mr J. Garde Grimsliaw’s studio in the intervening period between the conclusion of this year’s and the commencement of next year’s session. Regular readings will be arranged fortnightly, a small charge being levied to cover expenses. The question of producing a play was also fully discussed, and it was resolved to commence activities in this direction with a number of public readings. A committee was appointed to make arrangements for a public reading to be held in the near future. It was pointed out that, although those taking part in a reading of this nature would have books on tlxe stage, rehearsals would be held. It was considered that a reading of the works of one of the best of the modern dramatists would prove of interest to the public of Palmerston North. At the conclusion' of the discussion two one-act plays were read by members, “The Dumb and the Blind,” and Gertrude Jennings’s sketch, “Between the Soup and the Savoury.”
