The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, has accepted the position of patron of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. Representatives of the boyereign in the Dominion have held this office since 1884. The death has occurred at Toko, Taranaki, of Mr William Henry Masters, aged 47, a brother of Hon. R. Masters. Mr J. Montgomery, chairman ot directors of the Christchurch Press Company, has returned from a holidav in the United States. Hon. Sir Thomas Sidey Leader of the Legislative Council, who has been indisposed for about three weeks, has now recovered, and took lus place in the Council yesterday. He was given a warm welcome.
Mr D. Drummond, who has been chairman of the Dannevirke Hospital Board since it became a separate body, tendered his resignation or the position at the meeting of the board yesterday. In moving that Mr Drummond’s resignation be accepted, Mr L. Stein, acting-chairman, said that it was with the deepest regret that members learned of the resignation of their chairman after many years of valued service. The motion was carried and Mr Stein was appointed chairman of the board.
With travel as his hobby, Dr. Michael Dorizas, professor of geography at the University of Pennsylvania, is at present visiting Wellington. For the last sixteen months he has been finding his way round the world, visiting Russia. Siberia, Japan, Korea, Manchuria, China, the Philippines, Indo-China, the Malay States, Siam, the Dutch East Indies, Ceylon, India, Iraq, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Central Europe, the Belgian Congo, Central and South Africa, and .Australia, before reaching New Zealand.
