MAGISTRATE’S COURT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Aug. 13. The fortnightly sitting of the Magiatrate’s Court was held this morning, Air R. M. Watson, S.M., being on the Bench. Riding a bicycle after dark without a light cost L. Alora 10s, with 10s costs. L. A. C. Smith was fined 10s and 12s costs for allowing a horse to wander. L Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in tho Ranguikei Building Society v. H. T. Butler, i)2l 'ls, costs £4 4s lOd. W. R. Smith was ordered to. pay Willis Bros. £ll Bs, in default 14 days’ gaol, the warrant to be suspended so long as debtor pays 10s per month. Mr H. J. Fowler (traffic inspector) proceeded against Sydney, Stanley Bowen, farm labourer, of Turakina, for allegedly being intoxicated when # in chargo of a car and with having driven without a license. The case was a sequel to a collision which occurred in Turakma on June 17 when a car driven by Bowen had collided with another car which was v in charge of F. Branch, golf professional, of VUngantii. Mr J. R. L. Stanford appeared for defendant, who pleaded not guilty to tho major charge and guilty to tho minor one. Mr Fowler said that- when he first saw Bowen he was leaning against his car, which was wrecked. As defendant cam© forward he staggered slightly- t,nd smelt strongly of liquor. Defendant admitted having three or four small beers at an hotel. Mr Fowler had then taken Bowen to a store where he obtained a statement. It had been difficult to get the statement, as defendant appeared very confused and his eyes wore bloodshot. He had signed the statement with a shaky hand, while his speech was thick. . F. Branch said he was proceeding along the Turakina Road when he saw the unsteady lights of a car approaching. lho car was almost abreast when it turned abruptly towards him, striking the front of his car with the result that it got out of control. He had questioned Bov. on, ho replied that he had been on his correct sido of the road and that witness was in the wrong. There was at the time another man lying on the road and witness subsequently learnt that lie was defendant's brother. The latter after a time became very abusive. Witness saw that the men were drunk; they lurched as they walked. Defendant smelt very strongly of drink. Witness said ho himself had one brandy at an hotel. T. H. Bostock said he had accepted an offer of a lift with Branch. He corroborated the evidence of the previous Witness. Evidcnco was also given by John Hebb, garage manager, and W. R. Gibbs, a farmer. Defendant said he went to Turakina on the day in question arriving about one o’clock. He ordered provisions and then went to an hotel where, in company with nis brother, he had two small beers. After doing certain business he returned to the provision store at 3.30. He left for home about 6 p.m. He saw a car approaching rapidly, it was running In the centre of the road. He didn’t turn in but was struck, and his brother was thrown out.' Mr Fowler arrived at about 8 p.m. and cross-examined him and asked for a state, ment. Evidence for the defence was given by A. M. Sims and J. Fitches, who declared Bowen was not intoxicated. The Magistrate held that the charges had been proved. Defendant was convicted and fined £ls and costs £3 11s 6d, in default six weeks’ gaol p- and disqualified from obtaining a driving license for 12 months. On the minor charge a fine of 10s, and 12s costs was imposed. ' OROUA HOCKEY TOURNAMENT. ‘

The Oroua Hockey Sub-Association ladies’ hockey tournament was hold’' on the Athletic Club’s grounds at Halcombe this afternoon. There was a record number of entries, and conditions were ideal for the tourney which was carried off without a hitch. United, who have-'had a splendid season, crowned- their’many- previous successes by winning tho -Seven-a-Side Cup and tho miniature cups which went to each member of the winning team. Referees, were Messrs Te Tomo, Le -Compte Scewart, Smart, Gracio, and Sambo. The fourteen teams competing were from the following clubs: Waituna (2), Marton, Athleticl (2) • Hinemoa (2), Rata (2), ;Halcombc Ahtlctic, Stanwav, Rangiwahia, Tokorangi, Ohingaiti and United.. The tournament was divided into sections and as two grounds were available no time was lost in running off the games. The - semi-finalists wero Marton Athletic A and United, and Halcombe Athletic and Tokorangi,- Tokorangi and United being successful in their respective sections. Tokorangi were hot favourites in tho final, and attacked early 1 9 ga-mc. Offside play told against the blues and Miss Aiken took the ball upfield, manoeuvred for position and netted a splendid goal. The score at the interval was I—nil in favour of United. Even play ensued in the second spell but tokorangi were unfortunate towards the end of the game, when a shot from inside the circle missed by inches. Messrs Gracie and Stewart refereed tho final. At the conclusion of the game Mr McKoy, the prer *ll. - P res ? n ted the cup to the captain of the winning team and the miniatures to Die following seven:—Misses D. Ulston (cap“‘“L N. Jackson, M. Stent, Rita Green, Ruth Green, A. Aicken, and B. Staples, v . RUGBY FOOTBALL. Athletio juniors, by defeating Old Boys at Marton Park to-day, wrested tho Duff. Cup from the town team. The game was a very disappointing one and only once in the match did tho ball reach tho wing from a bout of passing. There was no score at half-time, but in the second spell Baxwell scored two unconverted tries for Athletic. Bey. 11. 1). Ashcroft refereed.
