MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Aug. 12. The fortnightly mooting of the Marton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers this evening, the Mayor (Mr F Purnell) presiding. .-Crs H. V. Cameron. A. J. B. Sicoly, W. B. Langston, J. D. Gorrie, A. McKenzie. T. Barton and G. B. Gregory were present. Leave o£ absence was granted Cr R. J. Moore. Mr A. E. Fir.nimore wrote m reply to the council’s letter of July 22 relative to the removal of a light at Ilawkcstone Road corner, conveying thanks to the council ana asked that now the light is not required would the council have it removed.—J he request was granted. A letter was received from Mr S. A. Horlock, referring to Ins verbal request for permission to erect a mast for a wirlcess aerial on a tree m t.ie park at the rear of his _ Broadway premises and asking the council if it would reconsider its refusal, of permission. He offered to pay a reasonable foe for the concession. Cr McKenzie pointed out that other similar requests had been refused, while Cr Barton supported the application. A lengthy discussion followed, and it was finally decided that the council write stating it regretted the application could not bo granted. A letter was received from the P. and T. Department, stating that it understands the re-surfacing of a trench in High Street has not been proceeded with ponding the receipt of authortiy from the department and referring the council to a letter of June 20; further stating, with reference to the trenches in Broadway, thattho question of re-surfacing these has been re-presented to head office and when a reply is received advice will be forwarded. —Cr Barton reported that a suitable arrangement had boon arrived at. Dir Madden wrote asking the council to have the kitchen stove attended to at tho house on the waterworks reserve. —It was decided to reply stating that Mr Madden had leased the place and was expected to ' keep it in repair. A musical comedy company wroto stating that as conditions have changed since their last visit, they would like information as to the general theatrical conditions in the town. —The matter is to be referred to the lessees of tho Town Hall for a reply. An application was received on behalf of Mrs Moore for a water connection in Wanganui Road. Left in tho hands of the borough overseer. The night watchman’s report was received. Tho Marton Athletic Club wrote pointing out the danger to competitors of poles in the park, caused through tho fence being shifted back, and asking in what direction would the council assist'in having them removed.—lt was agreed that, the poles wero dangerous and it was decided to supply part of tho labour required. The Mayor remarked that £750 had been spent on the park already this year. Mr Clutha McKenzie (Auckland) wroto giving particulars of the itinerary of the Band of the Institute of the Blind, which will visit Marton shortly. A letter was received from tho Railway Department, regarding the supply of gas at Marton Junction. —The matter was left in tho hands of the finance committee and Mr A. Wilkins, gas manager. The town clerk was instructed to write to Wanganui and make application for a suitable gas cooker demonstrator. Receipts from July 7 to August 12 totalled £1682 7s lid. The borough overseer Mr W. R. Brunt reported that during the past fortnight general maintenance work has been attended to and water tables cleared out on several streets. Tho trenches made by the P. and T. Department in Broadway had been repaired, the cost being charged. Part of Skerman Street had been sprayed with two coats of bitumen and chips, rolled and completed. They had excavated and graded a path in Follett Street. The reservoir was holding its full capacity of water and overflowing, the embankments were in good order. Cr. Gorrie reported that the works committee had decided on a “poached egg” traffic sign being placed at the Skerman Street-Wanganui Road corner. HOCKEY. There was a full attendance of committeemen at the Oroua Hockey SubAssociation meeting held at Marton tonight. The chief business was consideration of a protest lodged by the Hinemoa (Halconibe) Ladies’ Club, against the ruling of one of the referees in last Wednesday’s match when Uniced (Marton) defeated Hinemoa. Hinemoa alleged that the winning shot was an off-side one; also that the referee’s whistle was biown before the goal was scored and the goal consequently should not have been allowed.—During the discussion, Mr J. McKoy vacated the chair -as he was an interested party, Mr A. Gracie carrying °h in his stead. One delegate maintaine. , a shriek from a woman on the side-line had been mistaken for the referee’s whistle. Another delegate stated he had gone to the match in the capacity of a representative selector and had made notes on the game from the sideline which he claimed to bo original He proceeded to read them to the meeting. Ihe referee (Mr W. Frogley) was freely criticised in these comments on tho play . Other members made reference to the refeieo s ability and fairness, and Mr Gracie said it was the committee’s duty to support the referee. It was an unwritten law in all spo rt that the referee’s decision was final Finally it was proposed and seconded that the protest be dismissed. lhis was carried, an amendment supporting the protest having only four supporters. Mr W. Davis ° (HaL combe) asked leave for the protest to go before a h ‘gher body, this being granted.
