EXCESS OF IMPORTS.
AUSTRALIAN CRISIS. PRIME MINISTER’S STATEMENT. CANBERRA, July 19. Replying to Mr Philip Snowden’s recent statement that the safeguarding policy was largely responsible for Australia’s present position, Mr J. H. Scullin, Prime Minister ,said that the previous policy of allowing Australia to be flooded with imports was largely responsible for the depression. Mr Scullin added that the Australian preferences to Britain had increased from £20,000,060 in 1907, to £52,000,000 last year. These preferences would bo increased still further if Britain would enter into reciprocal agreements. He intended to place Australia’s position fully before the Imperial Confer snoe.
