THE SOCCER CODE

THIRD ROUND COMMENCES. ATHLETIC BEAT RANGERS. There was only one match in the senior Soccer League competition locally on Saturday afternoon, when Athletic beat Rangers at North Street Park. Each team fielded a junior player, but the match proved interesting. Flock House, who were at home to Feilding, defeated that team by six goals to one in a fast match. St. Andrew’s and R.S.A. had byes in accordance with the draw for the round. SENIOR LEAGUE TABLE.

MATCH AT NORTH STREET PARK. The match between Rangers and Athletic at North Street Park did not commence until 3.30 o’clock. The teams were as follow: Athletic (black). —H. Crowe, Rainford, Martin, H. Childs, Watt, P. Childs, T. Crowe, Sparrow, Kendall. Rangers (white).—Metcalfe, Hands, Smith, Palmer, Smillie (2), Pitkethley, Carnell, Marshall. Athletic won the toss and elected to kick off, carrying the leather down the greasy field. Rangers retaliated, but Watt broke a passing rush. The leather went out to the Rangers’ forwards who were successful in getting to within goaling distance. A corner was conceded but Pitkethley’s shot did not find the posts. Athletic gained possession and were successful in shifting the scene of operations to tho half-way mark where, in spite of a muddy ground and a greasy ball, some good kicking and headwork was displayed by botli teams. Athletic forwards were successful in a breakaway and in a second attempt H. Childs beat the goal-keeper. Almost immediately Athletic again dominated play in spite of splendid headwork by Pitkethley on the right wing. Watt gained possession and netted a splendid goal. Athletic 2, Rangers 0. Rangers exhibited some estimable battling tactics from the kick-off and had the black forwards sorely tried. D. Smillie had the ball to himself, but did not exhibit sufficient confidence when attempting a comparatively easy, though long, shot at goal. Again the ball went into Athletic’s possession and they maintained control for a quarter of an hour. Time and again Hearsey aimed straight for the goal mouth, but Metcalfe was always handy. In an attempt at a short shot, T. Crowe was fouled and experienced more trouble with his previously injured knee. ‘ . Half-time sounded shortly afterwards and the teams changed over immediately. , , r Athletic pressed steadily and Martin on the right wing was successful in passing Hands. H© dribbled the -f a i tlier up the line, but a cross kick failed j and the ball was once more freed. Athletic’s backs formed a strong barrier to attempts by Hands and defence was turned into rapid attack when Watt shot neatly. Rangei*s held the ball from the kickoff and kept Athletic out of the limelight. Without anyone to block him, D° Smillie dribbled the ball the length of’the field to beat Kendall with a low shot. Play was very willing and many neat and sure passes were exchanged. Rangers however, lacked combination and Watt carried the ball up to add ins third goal. , For quite ten minutes action was ot a high order and the opposing forwards were so evenly matched that the backs had little work to do until H. Childs evaded an attack and, breaking through, netted his second goal. Play had no sooner recommenced when, from a centre by Hearsey, H. Childs again netted. With only a few minutes to play, Rangers broke away for D. Smillie to goal. Athletic 6, Rangers 2. No further goals were scored before time was called. Rev. C. S. Matthews controlled the game. FLOCK HOUSE DEFEAT FEILDING. Playing at Flock House, Feilding went under by six goals to one in an interesting match. Feilding had the wind in their favour during the first spell when Fordyce netted their only goal. Although the field was greasy, a good exhibition of the code was given by the contestants, the scores not conveying an idea of the really hard and even game. The winners’

goals wore shot by Kendall (2), Atkinson (1), MacMillan (1) and Mills (2). Mr Marsden refereed the match. OTHER GRADES.
