TAIKOREA.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

TAIKOREA, July 19. The fine weather has broken, cold biting wind and rain coming suddenly to remind us that according to the calendar winter is at its height, though the long spell of mild weather has been making us forget tho season. The last two or throe days, however, have been wintry enough. The rain is welcomed, as many people were running short of water and in some cases wore carting it. . Mr Lange, agricultural instructor visited Taikorea School during the week, and congratulated Rita Ferris upon winning the school prize, with 38£ out of a passible 40 points for cultivation. Mr Lange discussed the work done in connection with the mangold growing competition, and also spoke to tho children of the Calf Club, a branch of which was formed in Rongotea on Monday last. The fact of this competition being judged in December, thus leaving the holidays free from work connected with it —-and also of tho same calf being able to be entered one year as a calf, next as a yearling, and again as a two-year-old, tho sole condition of entry being that tho calf be a grade heifer, born between July 16th and September Ist. to be judgod on condition only—will make this very popular. The fortnightly euchre and danco held in the Taikorea Hall was, as usual, well attended, in spite of tho wet night. Play was swift, and the twelve games took leas time than usual. Tho winnors were: Ladies, Mrs Turner, who cut with Mrs Sullivan for the prize; gentlemen, Mr Jeffries; consolation prizes, Miss B. Turner and Mr O’Connor. After tho prizes had been presented tho floor was rapidly cleared and swept for dancing. Supper was served, tho hot tea being very welcome. Mrs J. Governor supplied ike music for tho dancing. During the evening Miss Matai kindly sang a charming Maori folk song, responding _to a vociferous encore with a second item of tho same typo, which wa9 loudly applauded. Dancing was indulged in till a late hour, the evening, being in. every way a success.
