TASMAN AIR SERVICE.

ONLY MONEY WANTED. VISITING AVIATOR’S VIEWS. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) - AUCKLAND, May 21. An air service between Australia and New Zealand could be established right away providing the money was forthcoming. Such is the opinion of Flying-Officer Cyril E. Kay, of Mangere, who returned to Auckland yesterday after a trip south on private business. In his opinion the service could be maintained by giant multi-engined fly-ing-boats. Pointing to a map of the -world, he said that the stretch of sea between the Dominion and the Commonwealth was a formidable one to span by air, and the only way he could see to accomplish the task with that margin of safety that would be demanded would be by huge flying-boats. Aeroplanes would not give the 6ame margin of safety as a flying-boat that could land on the water if forced t'« do so. As for the size of the machines that would be employed, in addition to the weight of the passengers and cargo, an enormous quantity of petrol would have to be carried to cross the TaS' man Sea. All those factors meant that .a big margin of safety would be necessary. If mails werp to be carried the Government would naturally insist that the margin of safety would be very considerable. As to the navigation of the Tasman airway, Flying-Officer Kay did not seem to consider that there should be much difficulty. It would be necessary to establish stations that would send out a wireless beam and the fly-ing-boat which would, of course, be fitted with wireless direction-finding instruments, would simply get on the beam and fly straight to its objective.
