RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Racing at Tnuniurunui and Ashburton on Saturday. The Warplane gelding The Raider lias been sold by Air J. M. Durie, o£ Feilding, to a southern owner and ho has gone into R. Ellis’s stable at Riccarton. Diana’s Lad had to bo struck out of his Wanganui engagements as the result of hid sustaining an injury while working on tho track. He had shown distinct promise as a ’chaser at Kgmont. There promises to bo a big team of Awapuni horsed figuring at the Otaki meeting on the King’s Birthday, this centre furnishing 29 nominations for tho first day, while there are others coming in on the second day. Backers experienced a bad day at Wanganui on Saturday, but one favourite winning, while two returned minor dividends. Two eighth and one seventh favourites figured among the winners. Awapuni representatives enjoyed but a poor innings on the second day at Wanganui, Blue Paper boing the only local representative to secure stake money. The Paper Money filly nearly caught tho public astray aagin when she ran second to Valstreet when paying a dividend of appreciable dimensions. The Wanganui course has held an unfortunate reputation by reason of tho number of horses who have encountered mishaps while racing thereon. This year’s winter meeting found tho jumpers escape serious trouble, but the clean bill was marred when General Gas broke down and had to be destroyed on Saturday. While tho majority of tho local horses were at Wanganui, tho Paladin filly Winlock was competing at tho Marlborough fixture. On tho opening day she ran third over a mile and then won over a furlong shorter' distance on Saturday. On both occasions A. Quinlivan’a charge ranked second in tho betting order. It was rather remarkable that Kowhatu and plying Swift, who had filled tho role of pacemaker in the Wanganui and Hack Steeplechase respectively on the opening day of the river-city fixture, should have gone to greater things on the Saturday when they ran first und second in the Grandstand Steeplechase. Both had shown distinct promise, but the marked improvement was hardly anticipated so soon. Ohinemuri may make a re-appearance at Ellerslie next month. The Paeroa-owned galloper has been off tho sceno since her fall when contesting the Taumarunui Cup in December last, when her rider, H. Gray, sustained a broken collarbone. At Porangahau S. Marshall is moulding into shape a gelding by Crown Imperial XI —Sparklet, who waa bred and is owned by Sir George Hunter, states a Hawke’s Bay paper. Although in tho rough he suggests the idea that he will turn out useful, as he has size and conformation of the host. On the maternal side ho goes back to that speedy though erratic mare, Searchlight (Maxim—iris). I’aganelli and Glena Bay, members of M. J. Carroll’s stable, who have been turned out in the Taranaki district, will be at leisure for at least six weeks. Both will be benefited by the respite, as they have done a good deal of racing this season. Pendavies, whose name appears in the Penrose Hurdles at the fixture next month at Ellerelie, is in the same stable at To Rapa as Wiltshire. Pendavies was a find steeplechaser a few seasons back, but he went amiss and has not raced for a lengthy period. Aberfeldy is a dally visitor to the tracks at Riccarton, but he is being kept to light tasks. He injured one of his knees when he fell at the Canterbup- Jockey Club’s Easter meeting, and still shotvs evidence of the trouble, but R. W. King hopes to have him all right for hurdle engagements at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month. The Riccarton mentor, G. J. Pine, is busy at present with a couple of two-year-olds, Bruminel, by Weathervane—Snowstell, and Gleeman, by Tonbridge—Carol Singer, also a yearling gelding by PsychologyPaper Rose. These three comprise the active members of his team, as the others, including Noteworthy, Pixie Gold, Silver Coot and Don Jose, have been turned out for the winter. Chesterman has been among the horses qualifying at the hunt meets in the Waikato. It is reported that the Chesterfield gelding does not hold out any particularly bright hopes just yet, but he may make a jumper with time and experience. The veteran Boomerday is to tackle minor cross-country races at the Auckland Club’s meeting. The last time he appeared on the circuit, which was in the Mangero Steeplechase last month, the Quin-Abbey Bell Crispin gelding came to grief. Boomerday is stated to be in good order, and has shown plenty of vigour in his track tasks at Te Rapa.

'Mangani has been getting through his Great Northern preparation at the private track at Gordonton, which affords opportunity for speeding up needs, states a Waikato writer. The Day Comet gelding is likely to be at Te Rapa for some trimming up in jumping needs. Fortalice, who won the Opawa Hack Handicap at Blenheim, after being third to Rapina and Dancing Star in the Beaver Hack Handicap, two races earlier, is only just beginning to show his true worth, although he is now rifling seven years. He raced very moderately when owned in Taranaki, and did not climb out of maiden class till the recent Reefton meeting, when he notched a double for his new owner, Mr G. Adamson. Fortalico lacks nothing in the way of breeding, for he is a full-bro-ther to the speedy Richfield, being by Acre—Pergola. Waitaunaha, winner of the Hack Steeplochaso at Hawera, has an interesting lineage attached to him on the female descent, his dam, Vermil, being by Maniapoto— Ruby, by Turquoise —Denbigh, the latter mare having also produced Moifaa, winner of the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase. Waitaunaha was bred at Hastings by Mr A. Ellingham. He races in tho interests of Mr B. C. La Pouple, who holds him under lease, which expires cn August 7 of this year. Once before this season Waitaunaha —who, by tho way, is of doubtful parentage on the male side, for either Heather Mixture or Taunaha js credited with his appearance —had, prior to the Egmont fixture, been once returned a winner, tile occurrence being, recorded . m connection with the Taranaki Hunt Gup Steeplechase, at the annual gathering of. the Taranaki Hunt Club, when he won easily by fivo lengths from Rayonnant, with San Fora in third place. Sir Adrian Knox has a big job ahead c-f him in the weeding out of unwanted stock from the lato Mr John Brown's stud. Somowhcro in the vicinity of 600 horses are running at Darbalara and Will’s Gully, most of them untried geldings, among which there are certain to be some capable of winning fair races, writes the Sydney Referee. Many of the brood mares will also be weeded out, and it is proposed to make tho services of the stallions available for outside breeders. Tho sires are March Along (imp.), Air Balloon (imp.), Richmond Main, Wallace Morilake and Bob’s March. Early in June there will be a sale of brood mares, at which about 200 will be offered, and Sir Adrian intends to retain only about 30. In the vicinity of 300 untried yearlings and older horses will also be put under the hammer at the same time There are bound to be numerous cheap lots, and it will bo interesting to watch the future of some of the untried 6tock on the racecourse.
