GIANT LINERS.
TWO AMERICAN VESSELS. ’FRISCO-SYDNEY TRADE. Received May 19, 11 a.m. NEW YORK, May 18. A message from Quincy, Massachusetts, states: — “Officials of tire city, State and nation officiated at the ceremonies of laying the keel of the first of the two vessels for the Matson Line. The first will be Launched in February, and the second a few months thereafter. The ships arc not named yet. They will bo sister vessels. “The estimated cost of tire vessels is approximately eighty million dollars each. The length of each will be 632 feet, the beam 79 feet, the draft 28 feet, and the displacement 25,885 tons. The vessels will have a guaranteed trial trip speed of 201 knots, which will reduce the time taken on the voyage between San Francisco and Sydney to nineteen days. Each will accommodate 620 first-class passengers and 217 tourist class. Mr IT. Brookes, Australian Commissioner, in a congratulatory message, stated: “May I be permitted to express the hope, on behalf of my country, that tlio vessels, when completed, will return on every occasion from Australia to the United States laden to the gunwales with our produce.”
