LEVY FOR ADVERTISING.
ASTONISHING RESULTS OF A FOOD CAMPAIGN. What advertising can do in the way of extending industry was emphasised at the annual dinner of the National Advertising Benevolent Society which was attended by Prince George. The president, Sir Gomer Berry, instanced the “Eat more fish” campaign for which the whole trade agreed to a levy of one penny in the pound on the value of all the fish landed, the proceeds of the levy to be spent on advertising. Last year this levy totalled £40,000, and the results of the campaign had been simply amazing. The revenue of British trawler-owners had been increased by no less than £1,100,000, and the sales of fish had gone up by 37,000. tons in one year. It had brought new life to the industry. Trawlers' which in the ordinary way were laid up for a considerable part of the year were now working full time. In addition, 72 -new boats had already been launched, with the result that the shipyards engaged in building trawlers were working to full capacity. As another important result of this campaign,, the trawlers and boats had burned during the year 150,000 more tons of British coal. There were other campaigns of a similar kind, in which extraordinary results had been achieved by advertising.
