ADDITIONS AT HOSPITAL.

RELIEF OF CONGESTION. RE ARRAN GINcTt HE WARDS. Matters in connection with tho increased facilities at tho Palmerston North Hospital were reported upon to tho monthly meeting of the board to-day, by the managing-secre-tary (Mr A. J. Plrillipps) as follows: “The work on tho W'ilson Memorial Block being completed, tho buildings are being occupied this week. A 6 previously arranged we are emptying the Prince of Wales Ward Tor renovations, and next month will empty the Princess Mary Ward whep renovations to the Prince of Wales Ward have been completed. By early in July we will bo able to re-arrange tho accommodation so as to relieve much of the present congestion. Authority was given last month for the work in connection with the sterilizing rooms to bo done by day labour. Detailed specifications and estimates have been submitted to the Health Department, and I am now waiting formal approval before commencing work. When in Wellington I obtained tho necessary information to enable me to finish the specifications for tho Otaki ambulance body, and tenders for the body work are now being called. Work on the fever ward road is progressing slowly. We are using the services of destitute unemployed on this work. I hive spent some time during the month with Mr Allan on the details of the new theatre and the additions to the Nurses’ Home. The work on the plans and specifications is now well advanced. After consultation with Mr Allan, I have completed the specification, and tenders are at present being called for tho water softener. As its installation is an urgent matter, I would recommend that arrangements be made so that a tender could be accepted immediately when they close on Juno 2. Before the softener can be installed it is necessary to provide a covered space for it. As regards the most suitable place to make this addition, I discussed this matter with the chairman and later with Mr Allan, and recommend that a room 12 feet by 10 feet bo built on top of the present underground water stornge tank. This tank is reinforced with a concrete lid of sufficient strength to carry the softening plant. Tho estimated cost of building this room in brick of a stylo in conformity with the laundry is £llO. I would recommend that this work be commenced by day labour immediately, as wo will have a bricklayer employed during tho coming month for certain alterations in connection with tho sterilising rooms. Intimation of the board’s intention to discuss resolutions for loans of £130.000 and £6OOO has been advertised in accordance with the regulations of the Government Loans Board Bill.”
