RACING NEWS.

THE WANGANUI FIXTURE. FIRST DAY’S RUNNING, (By “Binocular.’) Patrons at Wanganui on Thursday were treated to an interesting day’s sport, but they had to withstand some heavy blows financially. 1 Aided by the fact that the Purua Hack Handicap was run in two divisions, the totalisator returns showed an increase of £l79l—a pleasing change for the club. Awapuni representatives fared comparatively well, the sum of £630 coming this way from three firsts, two seconds and one third. The largest contributor, however, was Aurora Borealis, who is hardly a local animal now, his owner having the mare down at Himatangi.

Twelve months ago the Century Hurdles was won by Mister Gamp, while Thursday saw Aurora Borealis, who has been quartered here throughout the major portion of the season, again showing up Awapuni in a very promising light as tho homo of jumpers.

Blue Paper caught the public napping on Thursday when she stayed pn better than they anticipated to win the First Purua Handicap. At Hawera she had stopped badly at five furlongs, but the Paper Money speedster found the turning Wanganui course an asset on Thursday. C. Broughton who was compelled by increasing weight to turn his attention to tho jumping -branch, hod the mount on Blue Paper at Wanganui to win tho first event on the programme and thus successfully signal the recovery of his license. Peculiarly enough, his younger brother, W. Broughton, who is attached to G. New’s stable at Awapuni, - closed the programme for the day by winning on Fquitant. The Callaghan filly Gueress bolted with his lightweight horseman in the preliminary of the First Purua Handicap to complete a full round before being pulled up. The filly then dwelt on the mark when the barrier rose to extinguish any prospects of success she may originally have held. Two of the stronger landed ones in Tahoma and Brilliant Light also made their tasks increasingly difficult by slowness at the jump out. Of tire pair Brilliant Light fared best thereafter by finishing in sixth place. Portray, who received his intial education at Awapuni was made a good favourite for tire First Furua Jrlacit Handicap, but the Tea Tray gelding tailed after having hud every chance. He begurr smartly from No. 4 position to take the lead witn Blue Paper, but with two furlongs gone the Paper Money filly had taken charge with Coon Song and Portray together. However, when the serious business was entered upon both Coon Song and Portray failed to withstand the stronger finishing charts of Latakia and Werata.

’The local mentor, L. Knapp, presented two candidates in the Second Purua Hack Handicap in Hunting Boy and Poppy Day, but whereas the former ranked tavourite, the latter was the outsider of the field. Poppy Day, who is an aged mare by Day Comet —Lady-UHicer, was making her first appearance with the colours up and she showed that the position was strange to her by standing on tho mark when the tapes went up. No doubt it is intended to put the mare to the jumping game in the near future.

While the handful of backers of PoppyDay eariy said good-bye to their investment money, supporters of Hunting Boy were on quite good terms with themselves when the Hunting Song gelding jumped away on the rails in attendance on Yaistreot and Treasury, two speedy nortnerrers. However, crossing the top it became apparent that the favourite's _ task was becoming increasingly difficult for he bad not bridged the gap to any extent by tho time the straight entrance was reached and lie eventually fell back into sixth place—a disappointing performance. The Valkyrian gelding Valstreet was brought south to tho Hawera meeting, but it was stated that ho was inclined to be fractious at the post. With a light boy up on the opening day, Valstreet proved a handful and was eventually loft at the post. However, with T. Webster hi tho saddle on the second day, the northerner left with his field to duly win. Thursday saw him go on with it at Wanganui and give H. Gray a winning mount on this occasion. Northern scribes in attendance at Wanganui had given preference to Treasury, but Valstreet evidenced that he was greatly improved.

The absence of throo dangerous sorts in Diana’s Lad, Double Soult and Calithe weakened the- Hack Steeplechase field considerably, but the manner in which Red Bank won made it evident that the All Red gelding .would have been hard to dispose of under any circumstances. Ilis jumping, as of old, was excellent, while he was ridden a beautiful race by Alan McDonald, who did not cover an inch more ground than was possible. Hymestrason, who attended his fellow Awapuni candidate home, was not so fortunato in that respect, for he was running wide out for the major portion of the way. Flying Soult, who was the outsider of the field in the Hack Steeplechase, made the pace for the major portion of the journey and surprised by the manner in which ho flow his fences. He died away before the close, but he might well show improvement later on in the season. Waitaunaha was Tying handy to the leaders half a mile from home, but, when ho was expected to run up, the topweight found that Red Bank and Hymestrason had too much in reserve for him.

The open class jumpers, while they were restricted to six, furnished a splendid display, five being together all the way. Kowhatu set a merry pace, but tired at tho end of the second round and could not foot it with the others when the serious business was entered upon. Ponjola showed at Hawera that ho was above the ordinary and he won very attractively, although had Matu not made a mistake five furlongs from home, tho Taunaha gelding’s task might well have been more difficult. Airtight and Brigadier Bill were by no means disgraced, although the latter got into the hen coop at the bottom of the straight at the all important stage. Maunga gave an inglorious display, although he had the satisfaction of completing his task. He was so far back throughout that one humourist enquired in a loud voico whether he was in the race.

A field of 15 runners in tho Kaitoko Hack Hurdles made an over large field for the Wanganui course and it was probably his fading to get a view of the first hurdle that brought about the downfall of Royal Acre. The erratic Vivo gave a taste of her best when she came with a strong run at tho finish to catch Airforce just short of the post. The latter was, however, a good thing beaten for his rider appeared to havo the race in his keeping at the filial fence when ho cased him slightly and then failed to get going again in time to stall off the challenge. There were quite a number of new recruits to the hurdling game figuring in the Kaitoke Hurdles and it was pleasing to find that they all completed the course without mishap. . Wyeford had shown at Feilding that he was a likely improver and the Warplane gelding made a bold showing the wholo way, only to weaken in the final stages and finish third. Limosa, First Ruler and Lin Arlington all made creditable showings, the Chief Ruler mare having been well back in the rear when the final lap was entered upon. Prince Lu is a bold fencer, but with Whisogno out forcing matters with him, the northerner was beaten a long way from homo. * Elicit then appeared to have the race in his keeping, but the 231bs extra weight told its tale when Aurora Borealis challenged. The Day Comet mare has proved very useful this season, _ but she has been somewhat fortunate in the poundages she has been accorded. To date she has won £1335 in stakes this seasonal! in hurdie and steeplechase events—yet she got in at 51bs above the minimum at Wanganui.

His track efforts had indicated that Perle de Leon was further advanced than the majority of racing enthusiasts had thought and the Polydamon gelding finished very strongly in the Century Hurdles tr snatch second money from Elicit, the rider of whom appeared to be caught napping. Mister Gamp, was practically, on terms with Perle de Leon at the bottom of the

straight, but the Bronzetti gelding could not make any impression on him in the run home. However', all the minor placegetters should be benefited by the outing. H. Gray, who had the mount on Bright Glow, won the Connolly Handicap when ho ran up to tho leaders half a mile from home for it enabled him to bo in a good position at the straight entrance.- The topweight nevertheless just managed to hold off a fast finishing effort by High Falutin’ in the run home and, had tho Hay Comet maro been less favourably placed, tho tables would undoubtedly have been turned. Admiral Drako commenced his run at tho same time as Bright Gl° w , but he could not maintain it, although ho was but threequarters of a length behind High Falutin’ at the post. Backers went astray on two occasions where candidates from L. G. Morriss’s Forded stablo were concerned. In the Connolly Handicap Cashier ranked second favourite, whereas High Falutin’ was ninth, but it was the latter who returned the dividend, if a minor one. In the Borough Handicap—tho sprint contest —Laughing Princo was installed fourth favourite, whereas Equitant was four places further removed in the betting market, yet it was Equitant who finished first with Laughing Prince fourth. It was, however, a very narrow margin by which Equitant prevailed and the local lightweight, W. Broughton, camo in for a round oflapplause on his return to tho birdcage. Peculiarly enough, throe Awapuni horsemen were in the first three places for T. Green rode Royal Parade and K Voitre Melissa, the second and third horses respectively. The latter pair finished wide out which might well have made the difference between victory and defeat.
