PAHIATUA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). PAHIATUA, May 14. A very successful sale of work was held in. the Foresters’ Hall, Pahiatua, yesterday by the Ladies’ Guild of the Presbyterian Church. The function, which is an annual one resulted in £95 9s 3d being raised, which is regarded as very gratifying in view of the existing hard times, 'the bazaar was officially opened by His Worship tho Mayor (Mr J. \D. Wilson) who complimented the ladies on their splendid effort on behalf of tho church. Ho wished them every success and trusted that thoy would do good business. During the evening tho Pahiatua Municipal Silver Band, under tho baton of Mr C. M. Burt, played several selections which were greatly appreciated. Tho winners of the competitions wero as follow:—Table contro, Miss A. Scales; cake-weight guessing, Mrs A. Wilson (Dunedin) ; cake containing hidden treasure, Mr F. Paynter; dinner, Master Valentine Brown; doll, Miss K. Bissct; been board, Miss N. Graham and Mr C. Watt: nail driving, Miss K. Dick and Mr H. Henderson; candle lighting, Miss Escott and Mr R. Hunt. Yesterday afternoon thcro was a packed meeting of farmers who had gathered to hear a lecture on “Pasture Management” given by Mr W. J. McCulloch, of tho Department of Agriculture. Mr G. H. Hodd, president of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, occupied tho chair, and briefly introduced tho speaker who has given similar lectures beforo, in Pahiatua. The address was listened to with the keenest interest, and at its conclusion the speaker answered many questions, put to him by tho audience. Ho wa3 accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his lecture. The management committee of tho Bush Rugby Union met last evening when there wore present: Messrs R. J. Smith (chairman), G. Gregory, E. L. Harvey, W. Ryan, H. Mason, A. Bentley and A. Henry. Tho Wairarapa team to play Bush on 21st May will arrive at 11 a.m. on that day. Mr C. Gray being the manager. Tho Wairarapa Union advised that it had asked for a New Zealand Union reforco to control this match. It was pointed out that tho expense of an outside refereo would have to be borne by the local union which was not in a position to pay same. It was decided to advise tho Wairarapa Union to that of-
feet. It was also pointed out that all tho players in tho Bush-Wairarapa match, next Wodnesday, wero to receive free passes to tho match versus the British team on May 31st, but that no such privilege had, so far, being accorded to tho Bush players. It was decided to ask tho Wairarapa Union for the same privilogo for the Bush players. Tho following will represent the Pahiatua Boxing Club at the tourney to be held at Rongotea on May 27th: —Messrs H. Reeves, B. Holdom, M. Gastin. G. Baker, J. Davids, T. Scrimshaw and Sefton Walsh. It is expected that a large crowd of local supporters will go over with the team.
