CENTRAL SCHOOL

-COMMITTEE MEETING. Members of the Central School Committee held their monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, when Mr W. Ili. Mayes presided. Others present were Messrs C. Taylor, W. S. Paton, J. C. L. Merton, J. Campbell and Mr W. H. Brown (secretary). At the commencement of the evening’s business the chairman presented to Mr H. J. Canton a handsome overcoat on the eve of his resignation from the committee, of which he has been a member for many years. In making the presentation on behalf of the committee, the chairman said that the resignation of Mr Canton was deeply regretted. “I am quite sure, he added, “that every committeeman, past and present, of the Central School has always had a very tender feeling in his heart for Mr Canton. The chairman added that the committee could not let Mr Canton leave without some acknowledgment of Ins untiring services. He referred to what Mr Canton had done in the pioneering davs for education and to what extent he had helped the children since. It was therefore with great pleasure that he asked -nr Canton to accept an overcoat that might serve tq remind him of his happy associations with the committee. In conclusion, the chairman wished Mr Canton health and long me in his well deserved rest from public life. The chairman’s sentiments were endorsed by Messrs. Taylor and Merton. Mr Canton suitably replied, stating that he had always considered the cause of education a worthy one and that was why ho had identified himself with it. A welcome was extended by the chairman to Messrs Campbell and Merton as new members on the committee. , The secretary was instructed io write to Mr L. S. Hands, a former committee member, expressing the committee’s appreciation of his services along with the hope that lie would still identify himself with the committee’s activities. In regard to the guaranteo of season tickets, letters were received from the Y.M.C.A and Apollo Swimming Clubs enclosing the amounts of £7 10s and £4 5s respectively. It was agreed that the amounts be accepted as payment in full. A motion was carried to the effect that the six Royal life saving medallions gained by pupils bo suitably inscribed before presentation. A letter was received from the Education Board stating that six new blackboards bard been ordered for the school and would be supplied in due course. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The headmaster Mr E. Bary, reported that the average attendance for the term ending May 9 was 750, the average roll being 800. During tlic term 101 pupils were admitted and 901 pupils (including 85 of last year s Standard 6) were withdrawn. The present roll was 416 boys and 1375 girls—a total of 791. As usual, Anzac Service was held in the Assembly Hall on May 25 at 10 a.m. The headmaster stated that lie wished to express his thanks to Rev. G. T. Brown and Mr B. J. Jacobs for thenaddresses to the children, and also to thank Mrs Langford for making the wreath for the Central School. Oil May 7, the Huia Quintette, assisted by other artists, gave a concert in the Assembly Hall, the proceeds m aid of the girls’ playing area. This fund had benefited to the extent of £l4 10s. by this effort and to the Hum Quintette and their friends was extended the school’s appreciation of their efforts. The headmaster suggested to the committee that the date for the school ball should be pencilled in. He pointed out that it was necessary to have the large hall at the A. and P. Association’s buildings vs the entertainment ball was too small for the Central function. Dates cn which to hold the function were suggested. The second term of ihe school year would commence on May 26. —The report was adopted, it being decided to hold the ball on June 27.
