ROADS OF POHANGINA.

YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED. STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN. With his term of office expiring at the end of this month, the chairman of the PohanginajCountv Council (Cr. S. J. Strahan) gave a short review of the year’s operations at the monthly meeting held yesterday. “At the close of my term of office, I wish to take the opportunity of thanking my colleagues and the staff for the able and willing manner in which they have assisted me during the past year, 0 stated the chairman “A very satisfactory position has resulted at the close of the financial year. It is pleasing to note that, although quite a lot of work was undertaken during the year, _ all riding accounts, with one exception, are in credit as follow: Awahou £236 4s, Coal Creek £205 14s 6d, Mangaone £236 Is Id. Mangapikopiko £335 14s lOd, Pohangina £217 Os 3d, Umutoi £291 Os 6d. Tamaki riding, as a result of having suffered very heavily from flood damage, and having had to purchase land for a roadman’s cottage, which has been erected, is in debit £lO3 13s 4d, but- I might mention that we hope to get a subsidy on some of the flood damage work, which will help considerably to Teduce this debit durin gthe coming year. I think it is probable that most of the ridings will be able to make a slight reduce tion in their rates for 1930-31. The outstanding races for the year ended March 31, 1929, totalled £629 Is lid, as against £514 12s 5d for the year under review. Since the close of the financial year £62 5s 7d has been collected. The ipain highways, as well as other roads in the county, have been well maintained; in fact, greatly improved, as in a great number of places roads have been widened out and banked up on sharp bends. The oouncil is in a very fortunate position in being well equipped with road machinery. The portable stone crushing plant and power grader are very suitable for this county’s roads. Since the introduction of the power-drawn grader we have disposed of most of our horses, as the team’s maintenance was always a very heavy cost. During the past year we have built two very substantial five-roomed cottages for our roadmen, besides making additions to other cottages. Public works undertaken, apart from main highways construction and maintenance, were the completion of McNae’s Road, Dig-ger’s-Creek bridge protection and a start with the reconstruction of the Tunipo Road.’’
