THE WEATHER
GENERAL FORECAST. A depression is now crossing New Zealand, but has diminished considerably in intensity while crossing the Tasman Sea. A very intense anticyclone has moved on to/ South-East-ern Australia. Winds northerly and moderate to strong from Canterbury northward, but southerlies now blowing over Otago and Southland are likely to freshen and extend gradually northward. Seas rough about Cook and Foveaux Straits and later on parts of the East Coast; elsewhere smooth to moderate in New Zealand waters. Winds becoming south to south-east in the Eastern Tasman and freshening; seas moderate to rather rough. Weather fair at first in eastern districts, but unsettled weather and fain extending from the south and west over most of the Dominion. Temperatures becoming colder. DISTRICT REPORT. UNSETTLED CONDITIONS. The Government meteorologist wired to-day: The indications are for northerly winds, moderate to strong after about sixteen hours, and backing by west to south. The weather appears likely to be cloudy and unsettled, and rain is probable after about sixteen hours. Conditions will probably become colder. The barometer is rising. MANAWATU RIVER GAUGE.
