INDIAN UNREST

CAMPAIGN VOLUNTEERS GANDHI’S SUCCESSOR ARRESTED. WOMAN IN COMMAND. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 13, 11.0 a.m. DELHI, May 12. Abbas Tyabji Agen, the Nationalist who assumed charge of the civil disobedience campaign volunteers when Gandhi was arrested, was himself arrested this morning, together with fifty-nine volunteers. Agen and his followers were about to raid the salt works at Dharas Ana, near Bombay. Mrs Sardjini Naidu, a prominent woman Nationalist, now leads the volunteers. EFFECT ON FINANCIAL SITUATION. LONDON, May 12. The behaviour of Indian stocks is among the most interesting points of the financial situation. The disqutptening news might be expected to cause considerably depressed quotations, but the majority of Indian secuirties remain comparatively firm, the city apparently believing that they amount to a definite obligation on the British Government. Although recent statements from the Indian Office tend to confirm this view, it is difficult to see how in the very unlikely event of a complete Indian collapse the British Government could undertake to shoulder such colossal additional financial burdens as would thereby be involved. It is hard to believe that this consideration accounts altogether for the present unexpected firmness, which some well-informed people attribute to private advices from Indian representatives of large financial houses, disclosing a less serious situation than Press reports indicate. The whole position, despite certain parallels, ; s curiously out of accord with the financial feeling toward Australia, which still exhibits anxiety and pessimism apparently disproportionate to the facts.
