CRICKET IN ENGLAND
THE YORKSHIRE MATCH. AUSTRALIA’S FIRST INNINGS. WOODFULL SCORES A CENTURY. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 13, 9.55 a.m. LONDON, May 12. •Play in the cricket match between the Australians and Yorkshire was resumed at 2.15 p.m. The weather was cold and dull, and the attendance small. Practically the whole wicket was damp, the roller bringing the moisture to the surface. Bradman and Woodful] commenced confidently, despite the bad wicket. A half hour’s play produced thirty runs. Bradman’s fifty came up in the over after Woodfull’s, although Woodfull had forty-five minutes’ start. Rhodes was given the ball at 115, but Bradman gave MacAulay a simple return. His aggressive innings lasted 100 minutes. He scored eight boundaries. Leyland got Kippax in the first over. Woodfull was meanwhile plugging on steadily. He gave a difficult chance behind the wicket when 78. McCabe was well caught ii> the outfield. The captain’s century appeared after 200 minutes, and although Bradman overshadowed him it was an excellent performance on a damaged wicket. Richardson batted very cautiously. Woodfull was caught at silly mid-on. He hit twelve fours. A’Beckett hit Rhodes for six and then was stumped in attempting to repeat the stroke. Richardson, trying also to hit Rhodes, gave the wicketkeeper a catch. Grimmett batted soundly. Walker failed to last long, and Hornibrook’s wicket fell in the last over of the day. NEWSPAPER’S TRIBUTE. LONDON, May 12. The Daily Express says: “Is there any cricketer in the land who would not give anything to see Grimmett bowl at Sheffield on Monday and Tuesday?
That Yorkshire should have been skittled in this ignominious manner shows that the invaders’ so-called weakness in bowling exists more in talk than on the field, and that the fight for the Ashes is going to be as grim as inett.”C. Grimmett, who is bowling sensationally with the Australian team in England, attended the Clyde QuaC School, and took part in school cricket before graduating to the Wellington East Club (in the days of district cricket). His parents lived in Roxburgh Street, Mr Grimmett, senr., being a bricklayer and drainlayer. During 1915 young Grimmett, who had worked for Messrs Smith and Smith, painters and paperhangers,, left for Sydney, and after staying there fore some time settled in Adelaide. Later on his parents also took up their residence in Australia,
