THE UNEMPLOYED.

NEW ZEALANDERS FIRST. MESSAGE TO AUSTRALIA. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 12. Hon. W. Veitch, Minister of Labour, stated to-day that he had sent the following message to Australia through the Y.M.C.A., indicating that New Zealand’s unemployment problems were straining her financial resources to the utmost, and, therefore, New Zealand could not on any account provide relief either by special works or otherwise for people from outside the Dominion. “It certainly is no pleasure to me to restrict in any wav benefits that would accrue to Australians who decide to come to New Zealand,” added the Minister, “but in the face of the conditions with which the Government is confronted there is no other means open and I feel sure that the good people of Australia will realise this.” RELIEF IN CHRISTCHURCH. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. The City Council voted £2OOO for the relief of unemployment at a meeting last night. A schedule of works sufficient to keep fifty men employed for two months was approved of.
