HOME-MADE ’PLANE.
CONSTRUCTED AT WHANG AREI. MACHINE FAILS TO RISE. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) AUCKLAND, May 13. A large crowd gathered at Kensington Park, Whangare#, in the of seeing the monoplane constructed in Whangarei take the air. Flying conditions were perfect. In the preliminary tests the engine did well, registering 2200 revolutions, whereas the average cruising speed is 1800. Attempts to leave the ground, however, were not successful. For over an hour the aeroplane taxied along the ground in efforts to take off, but it did not rise. The trouble was attributed to a defect in the construction of the tail. Other attempts will be made later.
