ENGLISH CRICKET
TEAM FOR TEST. OBSERVER’S COMMENT. (United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 12, 1.45 p.m. LONDON May 11. The Observer says; “Certain high quarters think that the 1 first eight places in the English Test team pick themselves. They are: Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Hammond, Woolley, Leyland, Hendren, Chapman and Tate, with the remainder from Ames, Geary, Larwood, Wyatt and Freeman.” The Observer describes this smug complacency of relying on men who won in Australia as a foolish invitation to disaster. The Australians themselves adopted the policy of resting on historic merit when the Tests began in 1928, with the result that they lost the ashes. Youth had to be admitted, resulting in the defeat of the Englishmen in the last test.”
