STREET TREES AND CAR PARKING.

(To the Editor.) Sir.—There are three matters I wish to draw the attention of the Borough Council to at the present juncture. First, those trees, conoerning which our present ALayor let tile Tadies get on the soft side of his heart, in Cuba Street, Fitzlierbert Avenue and Broadway where the roads are asphalted from kerb to kerb. They are on the full running road and obstacles to traffic, so that if anyone ran into them and they are not lighted the council are liable for damages, but not so if the grass tracks are on the side of the roads as the latter are not the actual running part of the roads. I would urge the council to remove these trees before the Winter Show. Secondly, parking of cars in George Street and Coleman Place. This should not be allowed at any time of the night or day in these places. Goodness knows, the wholo of the inside of the Square and Cuba Street and the parking area near the Opera House should bo enough to leave cars without putting them in the narrow George Street. It is up to the council to take action and cut out Coleman Place and specially George Street, for cars. (Do it now). Thirdly, the Square gardens. The trees, instead of being objects cf beauty, are too thick and need thinning out. They are getting more like a forest than a square garden, and half of the trees at the present time could be thinned out, for one is spoiling the shape of the other. The Beautifying Society never intended the Square to become a small I would urge the council to have half of the dense 6lirubs cut out and so make the trees what they should be — symmetrical and a pleasure to look upon.—l am, etc., C. S. PICKERING. Palmerston North, May 13, 1930.
