COAL STRIDE
VOLUNTEER LABOUR. CALL AFTER THE HOLIDAYS. LOSS CAUSED BY DISPUTE. (United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright.) Received April 14, 11.0 a.m. SYDNEY, April 14. Though the Paxton miners voted at the recent aggregate meetings to return to work on the November compromise terms, they have now decided to stand by the majority verdict and remain idle. Tho owners are expected to call for volunteer labour after the Easter holidays. The losses caused by the strike aro evidenced by the exports of coal from Newcastle for tho three months ended March 31. These totalled 122,882 tons, valued at £146,472, as compared with 623,606 tons valued at £734,238, for the corresponding period of last year. The quantities exported included: — To Victoria, 64,000 tons, as compared with 251,000 tons last year; to South Australia, 22,000 tons, as compred with 180,000 tons in the previous year;. to New Zealand, 5000 tons as against 55,000 tons last year.
