CENTRAL SCHOOL

COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The report of the Central School Committee to be presented at the forthcoming meeting of householders, states that throughout the year the committee has attended carefully to the requirements of the school. The storm water from the roof which had been a constant worry to the committee had been effectively dealt with by the board replacing the original downpipes with larger copper downpipes. The board had also effected repairs to all the windows of both schools. Partitions had been erected near the dental clinic to form a waiting room for children attending the clinic. This would be much appreciated during the winter months. The heating system of the school, as well as a new roof on the infant department building, was receiving the attention of the architect at the present time. “The baths were opened this season during the first week in December, and though the Weather has not been of the best a successful season has resulted,” the report continued. “The caretaker has carried out his duties faithfully and well, and the general conduct has been excellent. Through the untiring energy of Dr. Eliabeth Gunn and her staff, good work continues in the school medical service. The committee was pleased to be able to assist with the establishment of the health camp at Awapuni and six children from the school attended the camp and beneficial results were attained in all cases. The committee wishes to thank the board for its attention to the requests of the committee, and for its favourable consideration at all times. To the local members of the board, Messrs Oram and Woodroofo, we tender our appreciation of their efforts on our behalf. The committee also expresses its thanks and appreciation to Mr E. Bary and his staff for the efficient manner in which the school has been conductod during the past twelve months, and. for the assistance they have rendered to the committee. During the year Mrs Gerrand retired from the position of infant mistress and the committee took the opportunity, at the Christmas vacation, of thanking her for her valuable work in the infant department. At the commencement of the year Miss I. M._ Baldwin commenced duties as infant mistress.

“On Anzac Day a service was held in the morning, Rev. Canon Fancourt giving an appropriate address to the scholars. Mr B. Jacobs also spoke to the children, his subject ebing ‘Lieut. Gray, a Scholar and a Soldier.’ “Toward the end of the year Hon. H. Atmore paid a visit to the school when he took the opportunity of addressing the children, pointing out to them the great advantages they were gaining from the educational facilities of the present day. In lieu of the usual school picnic a sports day was held at the Sportsground and proved a great success. Good work continues to be carried out at the dental clinic! One of the nurses, Miss Baker, has retired from the service. Miss Baker has been attached to this clinic since its inception, and the committee thanks her for the constant care and attention she has given to the children during her term of office. “The committee also wishes to place on record its appreciation of the work done by the ladies’ committee in connection with the raising of funds, assistance with the school ball, and help in connection with the school picnic. The caretaker, Mr lhle, continues to give good service, and the committee has pleasure in complimenting him on the manner in winch his work lias been done. In conclusion, we wish to thank the Press for favours shown, their attendance at all meetings and their willingness at all times to publish reports.” The balance-sheet discloses, that the total of £BO9 9s 4d has passed through the committee’s hands during the year. The expenditure amounted to £756 19s 6d, ‘so that the yar ended with a credit balance of £52 9s lOd.
