TROUT BY THE THOUSAND.
In its annual report, which lias just been issued, tho Auckland Acclimatisation Society deals extensively with ike work of improving the quality of trout in New-Zealand rivers. It ’s stated that in various streams and rivers 250,000 rainbow fry were liberated, and 430,000 ova planted. No brown trout were purchased during the year. With a view to improving the quality of fish in the rivers, the society had endeavoured to procure rainbow trout ova from California. Advice had been received that 100,000 ova from the non-migratory farm of rainbow trout from the inland waters of California would be shipped either this month or next month. Tiro following general liberation lias been approved: ■*o,ooo fry into a tributary of the Waihou, prooably the Oraka; 50,000 into the Mangatangi; 5000 into the, Waiwawa, on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula; and 200 to be placed in the Tokeroa holding pond for release as yearlings.
