RUGBY TACTICS.

C. PORTER AS LECTURER. NEW PLYMOUTH, April 10. . The Rugby club representatives from all parts of the province gathered to hear C. Porter, ex-captain of the All Blacks, discourse on tactips at Stratford; last night. . Porter promised to accede to requests t<) coach the Taranaki team on the eve of the British match. In view of the coming tour of tho English team, New Zealand football had been ' criticised from all angles, said Porter. He had often been asked to give a nopinion about the ability f tho English team, but all he could do was give the impressions gained during the 1924 tour. Rugby in the Old Country was cf a much higher standard than most people were aware of. In 1924 the All Blacks were lucky in being always able to field the best team. His own impresison was that English county Rugbv was equal to provincial play in New Zealand, and that club football in some counties was of a high standard. The team England would select, he thought, would be able to extend to the fullest any other team which could bo got together. Owing to the new rule, Ne\y Zealand was at a disadvantage in the forwards when meeting a team playing under the old rules. As regards back play, New Zealand had nothing to fear. Porter dealt with scrum formations, explaining what had to be done to meet conditions created by the English formation of 32 —3. His team had found that the best means of getting the ball was to concentrate their weight on the centre of the English scrum. Regarding line-out play, Porter said the ball should be lobbed to one man only, who should Joe the only man to jump for it. The points made in the address were demonstrated with two packs in operation.
