MAGISTRATE’S COURT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MARTON, April 9. Mr R. Al. Watson, S.M., presided at the fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate s Court at Marton to-day. For operating motor vehicles without drivers’ reflectors attached the following were fined: Mabel "Alice Drinkwater (Palmerston North) 30s, William Martin Gardiner (Wanganui) 30s, P. O’Regan (Feilding) 30s, AI. Lockyer Grady (Palmerston North) 40s, John Pirovano (SnaniLon) 40s, P. L. Keat (Bulls) 30s, J. Aiills (Cunninghams) 30s, Percy Bismarck (Kiwitea) 303; costs in each case amounting to 12s. For operating a car with an inefficient handbrake P. L. Keat (Bulls) was also finew 30s and costs 12s. Driving in a manner dangerous to the public cost Thomo3 O'Reilly (Feilding) 20a and costs 335, the case being the sequel to a collision between defendant's motor cycle and a motor car on the Greatford Hill a short time ago. Kehu Paratini (Rangiotu) wa3 convicted and ordered to pay costs amounting to 12s fior permitting the use of a car which was not in a roadworthy condition. Ernest Storr, of Wanganui, a labourer, who is at present undergoing a sentencefor false protcnces, was charged with driving a motor car without a license. Defendant had his license canceljed and was disqualified for life from driving a car fast year. A fine of £5 wa3 imposed. Defendant was also fined 10s for failing to keep to the left of a traffic dome, and 20s for exceeding the safety speed at an intersection. W. F. Fawcett, for riding a cycle at night without a light, was fined 15s and Walter Hall, who converted to his own use a cycle, was fined £2. Accused had already been in trouble in connection with his family and the Alagistrate soundly reprimanded him, pointing out that it is tho duty of any person who comes by any article which is not his or hors to report the finding of 6uch article to tho police. Hall, he said, was like a certain figure in Shakespeare who was a “picker up of unconsidered trifles.” Judgment by plaintiffs by default was given in the following undefended civil cases: E. On a judgment summons, E. Amer was ordered to pay S. Wales tho sum of £4 Is at tho rate of 10s per month, in default to suffer five days’ gaol. PERSONAL.

Air S. J. Gibbons and Mr A. Todd, of Marton, are visiting Hastings. A gift evening was held at “Drysdale,” Pukeroa, last week in hofiour of Miss R. Knuth, who is shortly to be married. Aliss Knuth received many very useful presents. Tho wedding was celebrated at Waituna West on Alarch 12 of Kathleen Rose, eldest daughter of Air and Airs. B. Thomas, to Hector George, second son of Mr and Mrs W. Eames, of Livingstone, Hunterviile. Rev. J. H. Edmonson officiated. Aire H. V. Hammond has returned to Wanganui from Marton. GENERAL. Trophies offered to the Hunterviile Cricket Club for competition this season have been won by W. Hayward, highest aggregate of runs (601), and most catches (10), W. A. Bowick. most wickets (60), G. Shanley, fielding, J. Stewart, best allround player. The trophies were donated by Aiessrs L, J. Thompson, A. W. Porter, J. Hailwood, W. A. Bowick and Sutton’s Ltd. Tho Hunterviile School committee has received advice that tho capitation grant this year is £63. During the year £2OO has been handled by the committee with most satisfactory results. Tho football season opens in Taihape on April 26. Yesterday’s rain has taken the sting out of the ground in Rangitikei and the opening of the season in the Alarton district should take place on Saturday next. To-day’s junior fixtures wero postponed. At a s pccial meeting of tho Alarton Borough Council yesterday a tender of £1220 was accepted for the erection of the jubilee memorial grandstand in the Alunicipal Park. There wero 24 offers for the work. The residence of Air Simon Cartier, about two miles from Taihape, was completely destroyed by fire early on Alonday morning, nothing being saved. Airs Cartier and two young children were in the house when the outbreak was discovered and they had barely time to escape unscathed. Mr Cartier was absent from Taihapo at the time. The house, a five-roomed structure, was insured for £SOO and the contents for £4OO. A car driven by Air E. Burke, of Wanganui, capsized on Gower's Hill, about four miles from Marton, yesterday through a tyre bursting. Mrs Burke, who was in the vohicle, sustained a bad sprain of ont of her ankles and shock, while her husband was cut about the face and bedy by gia*< A pacing motorist t'ok t!>-. injured pair to Wanganui. The car repairs will be costly. Mr A. E. (“Moke”) Beiliss, of Rangitikei, has been appointed a selector, wKh Dr. Adams and Air J. Crowley, for the Wanganui Rugby Union.
