RACING NEWS.

(By “Binocular.”) It, is stated that Hydo Park and Our Comet, who wore recently sold to an Australian sportsman, may race in Melbourne. Tho lightwoight . jockey, C. E. Eastwood, is about again, having made a good recovery from the serious accident that occurred to him whilo riding at Takapuna at tho ond of January. Ho was on the track, at Riccarton tho other morning and he expects to bo riding again at Easter. Vprtigern has.boon accoptcd for in tho Storby* Memorial, ono milo and a quarter, .at tnp Waikato meeting to-morrow Ho lias .shown a! return to his best form recently,- running. in the Thompson Handicap at -Frontham and winning the Awapum Colcr Cup in good stylo. Tho Auckland Racing Club has decided to apply for tho following dates' for their mootings noxt season-.—Spring, Octobor 4 and 6; summer, December 26 and 29, and January 1 and 2; autunin, April 4 and 6and winter, June 3, 6 and 8. 1 ’ Defonce, an English-bred son of Carbine, who wad the last of the progeny of the celebrated Musket horse to raco in Australia, met with a tragic end in Melbourne, recently. While being exercised, another horse collided with him, and Defence was fatally injured. Defence won the Australian Cup in 1918, the Hobart Cup being also included in his winning repertoire. The imported horse Bright Land is to bo given a race on the flat, at tho Waikato mooting.. This will bo his first appearance since he was injured when being taken by train from Ellorslio to Wellington in July last. Bright Land was a particularly smart hurdler and won both tho and tho Campboll Hurdle Races at tho last Great Northern meeting. He has boon working vory freely on tho track during the last two months. • Rapier, who has finished his racing career, was a good class horse..and a great stayer, his successes including the Now Zealand Cup, Auckland Cup, Trontham Gold Cup, and Awapuni., Gold Clip. He lias sho-yvn signs of unsoundness lately, and though he might have survived another preparation, his trainer, 11. Nurse, profers to- retire- him- without risking the. breakdown of his old favourite. Sir Edwin Mitchelson, president of the Auckland Racing Club, was heartily congratulated at the meeting of the club on Tuesday on attaining his 84th birthday. Sir Edwin has a notable record of association with the club, having been a member for 44 years and president for 29 years. It would seem safe to conclude that Honour’ racing career is at '■ an end. The lameness which sent the chestnut colt out of commission last December is now stated to be duo to a fractured bone in. one of his knees. Honour has been sent to his owner’s estate at Teviotdale, Canterbury, and the son of Limond will probably have to win any further honours as a sire. The- Otaki Maori Racing Club’s programme for June 3rd and 4th will shortly bo distributed. ; There, will be seven races each day. The cup ia worth 330 sovs., and the handicap on tho second day 250 sovs. The total stako money for the meeting will bo £2220, being £l2lO the first day and £lOlO the second day. Special attention' is to be giveh to the track, and thcro is no doubt that horses frond' many parts will be in evidence. Tho moeting is always a popular one and. the attendance on this occasions is expected to be- a record. Red Heckle is engaged in the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, but his programme has not been settled. It is. pretty certain that he will not run in both events, but? F. Christmas will delay, for a few days a decision about tho race in which ho will bo started. Ho galloped nine' furlongs attractively the other morning, and tho Great Autumn may make a strong- appeal/ says' a Christchurch 'correspondent.' v;’;.;;. , Bullford, who was accepted for at the Hawke’s Bay meeting to-day, had not raced fop several years past, but in the 1924t25 season he was a good hurdler. After winning the Hunters’ Plate at the Christchurch Hunt meoting at Riccarton, ho accounted for the Hunters’ Hurdles. and tho JjOngbeach Highweight Handicap at tho

Grand National meoting. He did not start again till the Auckland summer meeting, when ho finished third in tho Ponsonby Hurdle Race and on tho third day bolted homo with 11.5 in tho New Year Hurdle Raco. Ho was an aged gelding then, so that ho must bo well up in years now.

BIG MONEY. S A SOLID PLUNGE ON TRUE SHAFT. True Shaft, a stablcmato of Nightmarch, was a costly proposition to tho ring at Roschill recently. Ho is a thrcc-ycar-old, by Arrowsmith, and is a sprinter of some ability. On March 29 tho books evidently thought ho was not ’forward enough, but they wore caught napping. Poitiers and Malvina were heavily backed, until tho True Shaft commission was launched. Howovcr, once tho big money got into circulation for tho New Zealander, his price rapidly shortened. Luita, a 3 usual, cleared away with a good lead, and turning into the straight was ahead of Poitiers, Truo Shaft (outside) and Malvina. Truo Shaft was going so easily at that point that his success seomed assured. Poitiers did not last much beyond six furlongs, and, with Luita tiring, Truo Shaft wont on to win comfortably. “ He* showed a lot of promise, and is almost certain to win another raco or two during the autumn meetings. Malvina was a fair way back early, but. finished strongly, but tho hot favourito, Poitiers, was a complete disappointment. Truo Shaft ran the. seven furlongs iiy 1.26, which, is a second outside tho courso record. Roy Reed rode the winner, who is trained by A. McAulay. Tho gelding belongs to Mr A. Louisson, owner of Nightmarch,- and tho victory was somocompensation for tho defeat of Nightmarch at Moorefield. OFFER FOR PHAR LAP. SUM OF £IO,OOO MENTIONED. • In Australia, when a horee out of the ordinary appears, thero are always plenty of wealthy men anxious to acquire him, as much for the pleasure of owning a champion as for tho prize-money he may win. That has been the case with Phar Lap, for whom big offers wore made last spring, and they were renewed last week by a wealthy Sydney syndicate, an amount of £IO,OOO being mentioned. Considering that he has won almost £IO,OOO since he left Sydney for Melbourne last spring, and that he also won over £IO,OOO in Sydney prior to that, he would have been cheap at £15,000 before the A.J.C. Derby. In addition, he has an excellent opportunity of picking up another £6OOO in the next three or four weeks. The fact that Phar Lap is held on lease until February 10, 1931, prevents, his owner from effectingirsale, except subject to the lease, and H. R. Telford would not be likely to forego his lease except for a large sum. ELLERSLIE TRAINING NOTES. ( I AUCKLAND, April 10. I Showery weather made tho track easy at Ellcrslie this morning, but the course proper, on which all the fast work was done, was in good order. Tho flags wero well out from tho rails. Gold Money played with King Emerald at tho end of six furlongs in 1.21 l-ssec. She is now bettor than for months, and will race well at To Rapa. Eager Rose comfortably defeated Kaiwainga over a mile in lmin. 50sec. She was not extended, and did her work really well. Avoncourt was too good for Land Measure over five furlongs in lmin. 6 2-ssec. This mare seems to be returning to form. Ruling King, Tambourine, -and Neil worked fairly fast without making time. Hampton Park moved freely over five furlongs in lmin. 7sec. Cynthia N. went well over six furlongs in lmin. 21 2-ssec.

Grand Spirit easily held Foot Rule and Silene over four furlongs in 51 4-ssec. Corinax and Gcrnlight both pleased' over a round, but Corinax,... with the worst'of the weights, was finishing the stronger. Jaeldy Karo pleased in beating Wild Country over four furlongs in 51sec,7. Sir Archie beat .Spring Abbey over' six' furlongs in lmin. 21'2-ssec.. If the, track is soft at Te Rapa Sir Archie may do a lot better than at Whangarei. ‘ i Kairangapai outclassed Arabesque over five furlongs in lmin. 8 2-ssec.

Rafflight was going easily in front of Trometus over four furlongs in 52 1-5 sec. This colt has only to reproduce track form to bo dangerous on Saturday. Quincoma and Mountain Guide jumped two hurdles well, and then ran a circuit in 2min. 16 l-ssec. 1 . Turukler, the St. Amans gelding; Thursby and General Lu all jumped tho small hurdlos without mistake. Kauri Park and Kamehameha jumped four hurdles in first-class style, and Soami cleared two in an equally proficient manner. Odin and Frcyja gave a brilliant display over the stoeplechaso fences on the flat, but when taking them the second time Freyia overjumped and toppled over at the double. She cut a foreleg badly enough to require a few weeks’ respite. Manta, Airtight (who has arrived early), and Salamander started out for a round of the country. Marita jumped well throughout, but Airtight ran off at the second fence of the double. Salamander fell on the hill, and getting in Airtight's way that horse was pulled up. Both, however, were set going again, Airtight, finishing up safely, but Salamander fell heavily at the last fence, and gave his rider (H. McNeil) a fractured collarbone. Airtight’s jumping was safe enough, but he seemed to lack confidence. L. Duliou will ride Royal Visitor, Abbey Dream, and King Willonyx at Te Rapa. After that meeting he goes to Feilding to ride Maori Boy, who is expected to leave next Tuesday. H., Wiggins will leave for Hastings tonight, returning to keep engagements at To Rapa on Saturday.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. The training work at Riccarton to-day was of an interesting nature in view of racing near at hand. The outside of the courso proper was again available and was made more use of than on previous occasions owing to light rain improving its hard condition. The plough, howover, attracted the majority of the trainers, and except where otherwise stipulated the following gallops were executed on that track. Jaloux and Greenaway wero associated over a mile, faking 1.45 3-5, and keeping together throughout. Ozone, who will be racing at Riccarton at Easter, showed promising form by reeling off five furlongs in 1.3. Arikiwai and Taragona comfortably covered the same ground in 1.5. The former continues to give every satisfaction in his work. Waterline was always going better than Semper Paratus over seven furlongs, taking 1.31. Pride and Swiftray registered a similar task in L3l 2-5. Spoon was responsible for another smart effort in galloping six furlongs in 1.15 1-5, while her stable-mate, Kakara, by Paladin from Orange Blossom, strode over the saino distance in a fraction slower time. Paquito impressed by galloping 6ix furlongs in 1.16 2-5, without being ridden out. First Sight’s task consisted of a halfmile sprint, taking 52. Adelphi cover half a mile on tho courso proper in 52. 3-5, beating Minerval, a two-year-old in F. Christmas’s stable by Arrowsmith from Lady Minerva. Te Awhina showed too much pace for Eaton Hall in completing six furlongs in 1.17 2-5. Leader and The Visoount were together at the end of five furloilgs run in 1.3 3-5. Leader went well throughout. Giggleswick was clear of Rapina after traversing five furlongs in 1.5. These stable-mates both appear in the acceptances for the Sandown Hack Handicap at Hororata, and the former is tho likely representative. Starahootor and Netley executed a useful mile task in 1.44 3-5, finishing abreast. The Bailiff was doing better than Courtlike at the conclusion of six furlongs, run in 1.16 1-5. Malmsey, who is to make her reappearance in. the Hororata Cup, recorded 1.32 for seven furlongs, Tripaway taking 1.33 for tho same journey. - Tariff showed his usual pace by reeling off half a mile on the grass in 49sec. . Aberfoldy, with Gala Day as a mate over the. last six furlongs, galloped a mile on the course proper in 1.46. He' will be ridden in the Hororata Cup by I. Tilson. Gay Crest had an _ advantage of two lengths over Hoylake at the end of seven furlongs on the course proper covered in the good time of 1.31. A rider has not yet been engaged for Gay Crest at tho Easier meeting. Gay Sonnet was under restraint in running six furlongs in 1.17 3-5. After Ten and. Gold Mint showed good form in galloping seven furlongs on tho grass in 1.32. Sea Raid and Weather Raid were sent five furlongs along the back, which they covered in 1.4. Owing to a misunderstanding A. E. Ellis has been engaged for both Red Hecklo and First Sight in the Great Easter Handicap, and to clear the matter up the trainers concerned have agreed to place the facts before the Canterbury Jockey Club and to abide by its adjudication. During Mr H. Spry's visit to the South Island last week he negotiated for the purchase of several horses, including Punchestown, Jaloux and Swiftray; but-was unable to finalise business. Conjurer, who has been under'the care of W. •,J. Tomkinson at for some weeks past, was shipped-to Wellington yesterday to join Mr C. Boyle’s other horses at Trentham. 1 On acoouafr of so many meetings being held elsewbwe, there is likely to be a scarcity of suitable lightweight riders for the C.J.C. autumn meeting, and some of the horses engaged in the two big events are still without prospective pilots. . Although Royal Saxon remains in the Great,Easter Handicap, his 'trip will depend on a horseman being obtained; otherwise he : wili race, at the Riverton meeting.
