During the night Sydney was swept by a phenomenal storm which lashed the metropolitan area for an hour, The wind reached a velocity of 40 miles an hour, and 39 points of rain fell in 35 minutes. Miniature rivers flowed down every street. The water banked up six feet high under a bridge in Ultimo, where a woman was nearly drowned. During the downpour a woman was killed by a car at Petersham.
