DEPOSIT OF LIMESTON
VALUE AS FERTILISER. EXPERIMENT TO BE MADE. The possibility of exploiting a lai—, deposit of limestone in the Pohangnui county to the advantage of the ratepayers was considered by the Pohangina County Council yesterday. Cr Knight stated that the deposit, was situated opposite the old sawmill site at Piri Piri, in the Upper Poliaugina Valley, and comprised thousands of tons of limestone. At present tins was being used for roading purposes. The speaker had sent a specimen aw.iv for analysis, and the report was that, the stone contained 79 per cent, of excellent .agricultural lime. As tincouncil had a crushing plant at the silo, it was suggested by Cr Knight that, several hundred tons should be ground fine and supplied to adjacent fanner-, at slightly above cost price, for pm-, poses of experiment as a top-dressing. The chairman (Mr Strahan): It may be of benefit to the ratepayers. The engineer pointed out that, there were three grades of stone in the deposit and it was questionable whether all would be suitable for agricultural purposes. , ~ Cr Closo said that the experiment might turn out to be a good thing for the valley. .
