DUNEDIN, April 9. A special 1 committee of tne City Council to-night .proposed to levy a special rate of 3d in the £1 in order to raise £15,000 for unemployed relief works.
The proposal was rejected, and it was decided to leave it to tho ratepayers to say whether a loan of £20,000 should be raised. ■ ' ■ Per Press Association. .. DUNEDIN, April 9. ’The third disastrous fire at Kaitangata in the last month occurred at an early hour this morning, when the Presbyterian Manse was completely gutted. The volunteer brigade was called out, but from the start its efforts to quell the blaze were hopeless qwing to the lack of water and ineffective appliances for a big outbreak. A strong easterly wind . fanned the flames. Mr McDonald came to Kaitangata from Pahiatua year ago, and his furniture was all new. The insurances on the effects are not available.
