THE WEATHER. (From Our Own Correspondent). WOODVILLE, April 9. After what, to New Zealanders, might bo termed a.drought, the weather broke yesterday, and a regular downpour resulted. 'To-day, showers fell intermittently until about threo o’clock, when a thunderstorm passed over the district. Very heavy rain fell, and did a good deal of good, but fanners need a great deal more before they can ■be assured that winter feed will be abundant. To-day’s rain will go a long way towards allaying all fears of an extensive drought. The night, except for casual showers, remained calm, Although 41 points were registered yesterday. no reading was made by Mr J. C. • Bolton to-day, but it is expected that the fall in Woodville proper will record a great deal heavier than the total recorded by Mr Bolton, the downpour just missing nis area. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The annual meeting of the Woodville branch of the Royal Plunket Society was held yesterday afternoon, there being present, Mrs Mules (president), and Mesdames Grinlinton, Davidson, Westoby, Tyerman, Hustwick, Johnston, Horne, Whittington, Haigh, Halpin, Jones and Graham (secretary). The president, committee, secretary and treasurer were all re-elected, as also were the vice-presidents, Mrs Horne’s namo being added. Votes of thanks were accorded the president, Mrs Westoby (for hospitality extended to the nurse), Messrs Grinlton, Hustwick and the secretary who has given untiring assistance for the welfare of the society. Tho annual report presented was as follows: —During the year just ended there has been a notable increase in tho number of mothers availing themselves of the Plunket nurse’s services. This is very encouraging to those interested in the great and splendid work. Plunket Nurse Hogwood always has given of her best in tho interest of tho mothers and babies, and the committee desire to extend to her their thanks and appreciation. The society desires also to place on record the invaluable assistance given by Mr Hustwick. The committee appeal to all interested to help in any way at all. A sum of £74 5s 2d is required to meet the responsibilities for tho year just ended.

FOOTBALL. At a meeting of the committee of the Woodville Football Club, Mr R. Bly presided, and there were also present: Messrs J. Charles, N. Ryburn, A. Harris, H. McNeil and F. W. Mackie. Correspondence was read on' the subject of. Woodville’s likelihood of entering a B grade senior team this year. Tho Massey College intimated their intention of entering a B grade team, and asked if Woodville favoured the scheme. It was decided to enter a team if the B grade eventuated, mention being made that Bunnythorpe would in all probability be entering a team in that grade. It was also decided to enter a third grade team, the question of a fourth grade team being held over. Mr A. Harris was appointed secretary. It was decided to play a return match against Dannevirke Old Boys who would meet Woodville next Saturday. This would bo a yearly fixture. Mr Martin Murray was appointed refereo for Saturday’s match, the secretary to arrange for match balls. After discussing business of a minor nature, the meeting terminated. A team to represent Woodville against Old Boys (Dannevirke) at Woodville on Saturday next will be selected fnom the following: J. Hutchinson, J. Charles, T. Dean, Duthio, L. Hayes, J. Scoullar, R. Walker, D. Lawrence. J. Brighouse, S. Anneson, J. Burlace, W. George. R. Spackman, P. Reardon, G. Young, J. Redwood, G. Morgan. T. Smith, C. McKinlay, R. Hunt, R. Jones, A. Murray, A. Burlace, Coulston and .A. Ross. GENERAL.

The chain letter fiend is again abroad. Several Woodville residents have been recipients of senseless appeals of late. In spite of the dry weather which prevailed for a considerable time, the Woodville water supply continued good. PERSONAL. Mrs R. G. Vile, of Grey town, i* at present on a visit to relatives in Woodville. Mr and Mrs Sydney Thompson, of Waihi, are visiting Woodville and are the guests of Mr and Mrs W. J. Wilson,-of McLean Street. Mr W. F. de Mahnanche, a brother of Mr C. E. do Malmanche, of Woodville, has died at Auckland. He suffered injuries in a motor car accident in February which resulted in the death of his wife. The deceased, who was aged ■' 57 years, owned a farm at Matiere, near Taumarunui. Ho is survived by six children.
