NEARLY ASPHYXIATED.
MAN IN SERIOUS CONDITION. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 8. A narrow escape from asphyxiation was experienced by Mr W. McKiernan, aged 41, a lodger at a city, boardinghouse, who was admitted to hospital suffering from the effects of gas poisoning. One of the maids who went to call Mr McKiernan for breakfast received no response, and on opening the door found him unconscious in his bed. It is stated that the plug from a disused gas connection had come out during the night. The windows of the room were closed. Inquiry at the hospital late to-night revealed that Mr McKiernan’s condition was serious.
