North, wrote accepting tho position as vice-pre-sident to the club and forwarded a donation of ill la, which was gratefully received. Correspondence was received from Mr W. Collier, of Palmerston North, who urged upon monibers the advisability of competing for their bronze modallions before the close of the season. Ho ottered to visit Foxton for tho purposo of coaching members and informed them that if they took their water work before tho end of the season the theoretical side could be gone through at a later date. —It wua decided to accept Mr Collier's otter and to thank him for hie otter of assistance. ’ The secrotary reported that all the costumes were now to hand and both reels were functioning properly. The new one recently provided by the Harbour Board was much appreciated as well as the new line and belt tor tho old reel. Tho latter was put in working order and used during Sunday’s demonstration. Mr R. Reay reported that Mr Palmer, of Levin, who was interested in tho formation of a Surf and Life Saving Club in that town for the purpose of patrolling the Hokio Beach, had asked members of the local patrol over to .Levin during a week-end to bo decided on for tho purpose of giving the project somo help. He desired that tho team arrive on Saturday and stay the week-ond. All expenses would be puid.—lt woo decided to accept the invitation and the matter of tho selection of ii team to make the trip was left in tho hands of Captain F. Burns. Mr Collier was elected manager for tho trip. Mr F. Burns (captain of the club) said that since last meeting he had taken up the matter of tho formation of a school patrol. It was his intention to obtain tho services of a school team and train them in life saving methods as lator the boys would prove useful members of the club. He had also taken up the matter of a formation of a football club and arranged a preliminary match with Oroua Downs. It was decidod to form a football club to bo called the Foxton Surf and Life Saving Football Club' and Mr R. Reay was elected captain and Mr J. Robertson vice-captain. Mr E. Alsop will carry put the duties of aeoretary. Mr Reay suggested that the club play in the third grade Wednesday competition in Palmerston North. Mr F. Tho whole affair would ccat the club very little as the boxers were prepared to assist the Surf Club in the matter and all that now remaining to be fixed was the obtaining of sanction from the Now Zealand Boxing Association for the formation of an amateur boxing club locally without which the bout could not be staged.—Tho chairman complimented Mr Burns on his efforts on behalf of the club and suggested that no action bo taken in the matter until a reply had been received from Wellington. It wa3 decided to patrol tho beach over the Easter holidays. FOOTBALL. On Saturday two friendly games were played locally when the seniors and j.uniors met and defeated their respective opponents, Bulls and Koputaroa. The celebrations in connection with the 85th anniversary of tho Rev. James Duncan’s arrival in Foxton will draw to a close next week and will terminate with a banquet. During the week-end Rev. James Gibb, D.D., of Wellington visited Foxton in connection with the celebrations

and conducted the services in the morning and evening at tho local Presbyterian Church. The attendances were very good, the church being filled to capacity in the evening. In briefly extending a welcome on behalf of the congregation to Dr Gibb, Rev. Mr Nicholas remarked that the late Rev. James Duncan, before settling in Foxton 85 years ago, had ministered to a few Presbyterian families in Wellington who had subsequently founded St. John’s Church, over which Dr Gibb had subsequently ministered with marked success for many years. After tho services Dr Gibb was met by many who had sat under his ministry both at First Church, Dunedin, and St. John’s, Wellington. During tho course of the evening service solos were rendered by Mrs Gray and Mr D. R. Barron, and tho ohoir, under tho qonduotorship of Mr R. T. Betty, rendered an anthem.

Yesterday Dr Gibb paid a visit of inspection to the local District High School. He was accompanied by Mr J. K. Hornblow, chairman of tha School Committee, who introduced him to the children, referring to tho fact that it was the first occasion on which a Doctor of Divinity had visited tho school. Dr Gibb addressed the pupils of Standards 4, 5 and 6 and later the pupils attending the secondary department. He urged upon them to be truthful at all times and to avoid excuses and exaggeration. There could be no real character without truth, and it was always much better to take a “licking” for a wrong doing than avoid it by untruthfulness tor the sting of tho punishment never lasted more than a minute or so, whereas the shame of deceit lasted for a very long time. He also urged upon the children tho necessity for pride in their school and teachers and was accorded cheers As he left the school. ■ .„ , Mr H. H. Hornblow, of Nelson, is at present on a holiday visit and is staying with Mr and Mrs W. E. Barber, of Alotuiti. Air D. McCormao, of Wellington, is at present on holiday in Foxton. Porpoises are reported to be fairly plentiful along the coast at present. On Sunday a number of shoals wore seen sporting in the sea quite close in shore and attracted a good deal od attention. Nominations of candidates for election to tho local District High School Committee closed at eight o’clock last night. Ten nominations Wuro recoived, but that of Mr H. Hutchins was withdrawn, leaving only sufficient to fill the nine vacancies. ,The new committeo will therefore consist of the following Messrs J. K. Hornblow, M. E. Porronu, Jno. Ross, R. Rangiheuea, G.- F, Smith (sitting members) , and Messrs C. M. Howett, R. Alayor, I. W. Mudford and Fredk. Robinson (now members). The scries of harvest festival services whioh have been conducted over tho weekend by the local Salvation Army Corps culminated last evening with a most entertaining concert and sale of produce. The items of tho children pleased the large attendance immensrely and the tuneful singing was quite infectious, at timos everyone joined in. The following programme was given: Scripture reading, Miss F. Andrews; recitation, Alus D. Coley; solo on ‘washboard, Lieutenant A. Statt; duet, Miss F. Symons and Lieutenant Statt;' dialogue, “The Old Folks at Home”; recitation, Ensign I, Smith; dialogue, Lieutenant Statt and Young Folk. The chairman was Captain C. Loo. During tho evening Ensign Smith sincerely thanked tho energetic Levin officers who came over and assisted so materially to milp the services suoh a success. Air Woodroofe very kindly disposed of all the gifts of produce, etc., at satisfactory prices and tha local funds will be greatly augmented.
